Tina, Tiny Pieces Chapter 11 – Part 1
At Tina and Henry’s, late Saturday afternoon
Tina, where’s the set of tongs for the barbeque? The ones your mom and dad got us?
I smile through gritted teeth. This makes time number ten, or twelve. I’ve lost count and I wonder if he intends to mention my parents, our wedding, or ”our kids” every 15 minutes for the entire evening.
Look by the grill.
I see Angelica sitting by herself on the grass. She’s too young to join in with the other kids, all between 3 and 5. She can’t run yet and nothing holds her attention long enough to keep them interested in her. I wander over to her, I plop down on the grass next to her. She’s pulling it, she’s eaten some. I wipe it out of her mouth, I kiss her cheek.
How are you doing, Boo? Are you having a good time?
Tina?
I look up. He’s shading his eyes from the sun, holding up the tongs like an Olympic torch, grinning.
Found them!
I give him a hearty, sarcastic thumbs up. He resumes talking to the guys, whose wives sit in patio chairs chatting.
Tina?
Before they arrived, I dutifully chopped, tossed, marinated and baked. I set out plates, silverware and glasses. We stepped around one another, him petulant and cold, me tired and uninterested. Since the moment they walked through the door — Steve and Karen and their two sons and Marty and Chloe and their two daughters and one son – he’s been relentlessly cheery, annoyingly cloy and cuddly, on me relentlessly.
Yes?
Do I put anything on these or just throw them on the way they are?
I’ve told him this three times already.
The way they are.
I pick her up, I set her in my lap. She throws a handful of grass up in the air, most of it lands in my hair, a blade or two flutter up my nose. I pull at it, I sneeze.
Oops. Mama got some grass in her nose, huh? Let’s go over here and sit and make nice with these people. Want to go sit down on some chairs, Angel? Let’s go sit.

I liked this Tina….fuck good ‘ol Henry..thanks for another great chapter.
Gee, I think everybody had more fun at the barbeques in WeHo. I was supposed to notice that Henry’s an asshole, wasn’t I?
Henry wants everyone to think he is the father. He doesnt want Tina to talk. He is truely a class No 1 asshole. Bet Tina doesnt stay with him to much longer. Thanks
LK you know you’re tha bomb, right? Ok I admit it, I love bitchy SaTina.. I can’t help it.. She’s a very sad unhappy bitter woman and that;s what makes her interesting to me.. I duno how can Henry still live with her.. This story rocks.. And no I’m still one of the very few people who don’t hate the “real” Tina, not even after S3.. *shrug*
I enjoyed tina in this chappy. I was rooting for her to make everyone uncomfortable. I still maintain tina needs help, very badly and she also needs to get rid of Henry, what a waste!
You are one funny lady! Your description of teaching your dog to go down the slide had me in stitches. You write Tina so well. She is obviously miserable w/her life w/Henry and his friends. I don’t think she thought that she would be so bored and actually angry with their small mindedness. At least Bette was exciting and somewhat unpredictable. Poor Angel will never fit in w/this crew. At Tina has the balls to admit to a relationship w/Helena.
This chapter reminded me of Jenny’s welcome home dinner in ep. 303 because both were totally uncomfortable situations for at least 1 person. Tina definitely had my support in this chapter, but I still think she needs help. This Henry is such a wuss. He should’ve realized from day 1 that Angelica was always going to be a reminder of Tina’s life prior to him.
Excellent chapter…..Never explain,never apologise Tina!
Hoho, let’s make a toast to the happy ‘normal’ domestic life.
Really loved that chapter….and well done to Tina….do i detect some “Backbone”….almost and i do mean almost felt sorry for Henry….
Now, this is the Tina that we all love and want desperately to go and get her woman. She maybe finally coming to her senses. Now she needs to get Angelica back to her other mother and quickly. As much as I hate what she has done to Bette, she belongs with her. Maybe now she is understanding that Bette is her soulmate and lover. Great chapter, even though I hate Henry and his friends.
Oooh, all these fireworks and it isn’t even the Fourth of July yet!…….Henry is being consistent. He’s a middle class white male that was brought up (I suspect) with a modicum of liberal influence and probably fancies himself progressive, until it hits home and threatens his male ego, pride and heterosexual stability. So trying to get Tina to refute her former life, to banish it into non-existence and to try and coerce Tina into heterosexuality doesn’t seem that far off base……Henry is obtuse, oafish and definitely angry, but he is not mean spirited for sport, he is trying to protect an ideal that Tina must have lead him to believe she believed too – at least at the very beginning……..Angelica’s coloring is just another thorn in his side, it makes Tina’s past that much more vivid and undeniable…….Funny that it was his friends contretemps that sent the barbecue into a tailspin…….Henry’s insistence at going into the house to talk and Tina’s refusal plays true to her usual form – she set the stage for a meltdown, just like she usually does…….Tina threw down the gauntlet, practically challenging Karen to ask if the donor was black. Tina knew exactly what she was doing – she was making someone else responsible for her confessions. She can absolve herself of guilt by blaming someone else’s curiosity. She’s passive/aggressive and she is as proficient as a matador working a bull, changing direction on a dime, all the while doing it with agility and grace…….Henry’s near violent reaction to Tina’s attempt to reveal her past was not exactly what she expected. I think she sees him as malleable to a certain extent, but his world is starting to unravel so she had better beware of just how far she pushes him……..Tina tacitly acknowledges that she is going to deliberately hurt and humiliate Henry, goading him into a fight……..Tina is upset with her life and the decisions she has made so she’s taking her anger out on Henry and justifying it by allowing herself to believe that Chloe is somehow giving her permission to do so. Again, she looks to have others do her bidding, give her the permission that she won’t actively take upon herself……..Henry’s continual annoyance with Angelica’s coloring is going to be not just a constant reminder that Tina has a past, but perhaps the nail in the coffin of their relationship. Angelica will never be anything other than what she is on the outside. Whether or not this is the hill that Tina chooses to die on to drive that point home and reconcile herself with her past remains to be seen…….Polite company = What Henry is comfortable with………Once Steve made the connection between Helena Peabody and the lawsuit it became like driving by an accident, they all knew that they shouldn’t look – but they did……Loved Chloe’s reigning everybody in just a bit, she has a balance that Tina may be able to leverage…….Tina picked and picked at the truth much like a scab until it was peeled back exposing the ugliness that lay beneath…….Now that Tina has made a move it will be interesting to see if she has the fortiude to accept the responsibility for what she has unleashed, or will she back off and regroup, possibly waiting for another opportunity to find a scape goat for her lack of courage………Kid, you are so gifted at painting Tina as confounding, galling and intriguing at the same time. Your story gets more absorbing with each chapter you write. Phenomenal talent, I tell you….phenomenal. More, more and yes, more.
“So … the donor was black?”…oh shiznit, this is getting juicy!…Back to the story…
Let’s see: Tina was with a WOMAN, that woman was BLACK…what else could she do to hit the trifecta of political uncorrectness?…HAVE A BIRACIAL BABY WITH THE BLACK WOMAN PARTNER…WE HAVE A WINNAH!!!!!!!!!! (poor Henry)
…and she hasn’t even got to the Bette part yet! Rich!…Hey, this is southern California, everyone has a history, don’t they?..Not in the Valley?…Tina redux! I’m lovin’ it!!!!
As much as I love Tina (not as much as I love Bette) and despite Henry. I feel sorry for him. I’m not fond of men, I fancy women, but I really care for mankind. Tina has chosen this life with Henry, even married him, and now is treating him the same way she was treating Bette. I don’t like it when people are making assholes out of eachother, and lower themselves to that level. However this is a really great story and I can’t wait for you to continue. Love You Girl.
you are the most descriptive writer, i abolutely luv your writing, and yes you still keep my stomach clenched with each paragraph…keep up the great work!
Life on Wisteria Lane. Tina obviously loves it. Or not. This is a great story but the mere thought of Tina as a Desperate Housewife. Blech.
This was brilliant. Henry was blind from day one about Angelica. I would love to see it play out exactly like this in S4. Good to see Tina get it together and own her daughter and her own past. Now, on to the therapist.Favorite line: “and that she was all woman.” Oh yes. All and then some, Hank.
God, if I had to have a barbeque with a bunch of uptight straight couples I’d be freaking! But, as we all know, it was Tina’s choice to live with Henry. Seems a bit unfair to make him suffer for her making the wrong choice, though. Now let’s see how she gets herself out of this mess.
It’s good that she talks about this, she needs to figure out were she is coming from and if this is the way you will have her do it. Hell Ya!!! Loved the story, I wish this was a book that I could read cover to cover, but I will wait till you post again.
i’m so sick of henry, what an ass…why can’t tina just leave him and be alone and get back with her friends and work things out with bette for angie’s sake…why can’t she? is it okay to keep my hopes up?
Hurray! Tina’s finally getting a spine, where Henry and suburbia are concerned. There’s hope for her yet. Great update…thanks.
Same ‘ol Tina, passive aggressive. There was no reason for her to mention her relationship with Helena except to embarass Henry, mission accomplished!
nope nope guv’nor..still nary an ounce of pity for Tina, she made her bleedin bed..and don’t ask me why I am talking like a Brit. I want to know why YOU wanted the dog to go down the slide!there was a lovely lady named Bette…who lasty had better remember, and soon!!!luv ya old chap!
Once again, LOVED the authors comments. You should seriously write a comedic story. Chapter was wonderful as always. Thank you kid.
Right on Tina … Fuck you Henry. Kick him to the curb T.
