TLW10 – What condition is that?

Bette Porter and her assistant James are in Bette’s office at the California Arts Center (CAC) where she’s employed as the Director. James is reading off a notepad but Bette isn’t listening. All her attention is focused on her computer monitor.

Bette: The fucking Peabody Foundation hasn’t awarded us a single fucking penny. They’ve pulled our funding.

James: Well there’s got to be another page.

James leans over her shoulder looking down at the monitor. He puts his hand over the mouse to scroll farther down the page. Bette looks completely stressed as her eyes quickly scans the Foundation’s webpage listing dozens of grant recipients. James’ search confirms that the CAC is not on the list.

    James: Shit.

Bette is a little surprised at the expletive coming from her assistant but echoes it when her eyes move to the very bottom of page.

    Bette: Shit.

At that same moment Tina Kennard is sitting in a similar pose at her desk at the Headquarters for Social Justice focused on her computer screen as the she scrolls through the same webpage. Her co-workers are hovering anxiously awaiting news of the result of their grant proposal.

Tina: Oh my God you guys.

Tina could barely contain herself as she reaches the bottom of the page and reads out loud. “The Peabody Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to the Headquarters for Social Justice in Los Angeles California. Grant applicants: Tina Kennard and Oscar Alvarez.”

    Alma: You did it!

Tina stands up from her chair as more people come into her office and start bustling around happily, clutching each other in their excitement. Tina is astounded but then something occurs to her. She frowns as she sits back down at her desk to take a closer look at the webpage. Her co-workers watch as Tina’s expression changes. Her furrowed brows were always an indicator of when something is worrying her. As she frantically starts typing on her keyboard her co-workers tease her not quite comprehending her total mood change.

Alma: I think that’s it Tina. I don’t think they’re gonna give us another one.

    Debbie: Oscar is gonna flip!

Tina stops typing and clears her throat.

Tina: Can you guys excuse me for a minute? I need to make a phone call.
