Alice turned and looked at me, her eyes watery. She opened her mouth and I knew she was about to make an outburst.

"Oh, Helena! You sure know how to make a girl’s heart swell!" Alice screamed. I could do nothing but smile. The teacher looked at us and I just grinned a bit.

"Yeah, sorry." Alice said after me. We gave each other a look and went back to typing.

I sighed and began typing. Before I could hit enter, she had already sent me a message.

I paused for a moment, unsure of what to say next. Do I just tell her that I’m attracted to her? Of course not.

LATER AT SHANE’S PARTY

I saw them from afar. Bette. Tina. Henry, Tina’s new man. I could tell by Bette’s pained expression that Tina was flaunting Henry in front of her. Tina had the tendency to do that. She flaunted me a bit when we were together. I walked over calmly and smiled at Bette, who had just noticed me.

"Bette!" I said as I gave her a hug. Putting my lips against her ear, I whispered, "Play along." I felt her shudder against me as my lips were removed from her ear. I knew I wanted to cause that again somehow.

"Helena."

"I’m so glad you made it. You look…amazing."

"So do you."

"Thanks. Um…let me be the first woman to buy you a drink. There’s a line of women already trying to get your attention tonight." I smiled, my eyes staying on Bette’s. I realized that this was no longer me saving Bette’s skin. It was intense, I know she felt it as much as I did.

"Eh hum." Tina was trying to get my attention.

"Oh, Tina. Hello. You must be Henry."

"Yeah…" He started. Even the man’s voice was repugnant.

"God, you really must be desperate." I turned back to Bette, "Come on, love. Let’s get that drink and celebrate with our friends."

I wrapped my arm around her waist and walked her away from the pair.

"Thanks. You didn’t have to do that…"

"It was my pleasure, love." She looked at me and smiled, "So, for that drink!"
