Turn About Is Fair Play – CH21

Wait Tina! Bette walked over to her. Cant you just explain it to me? Bette asked in a painfully sad tone.

No Bette. Im sorry I cant. Its something youll have to figure out for yourself, Tina looked at her watch and then reached for her phone.

Can I give you a ride back?

No, Id rather take a cab. Plus, youve got Jenny waiting on you, Tina pointed to the car.

Can I at least wait with you til the cab comes? Bette forced a smile. Tina shrugged and squatted on the ground. Her mind was racing and a migraine was threatening to take over her head. She could really use a ride to get her back to Alices faster, but the awkward silence was easier with a stranger. Ill bring the car closer and well wait til it comes okay, Bette ran over to get the car.

Tina sat silently in the back seat hoping the cab would hurry up and arrive. Bette was fussing with the radio and Jenny breathed heavily seemingly enjoying her slumber.

Youll have to go to the store or see if you can download it, Tina broke the silence. I heard it by chance and looked it up on the Internet, she continued.

Oh, Bette replied, a little unnerved that Tina figured out what she was trying to do.

Knowing that Tina wasnt up for conversation, Bette continued to scan through the stations until the lyrics of a song caught her ear sending a chill through her bones.

    You shouldn’t know these things
And be this awfully well in tune
Go as if not aware be like those others that assume
You knew and you still managed to find my stare
And you shouldn’t know these things about me

The words felt like someone had invaded her soul, reached the depths of her being and wrote her feelings down. The lyrics showed her that she and Tina were still in tune with each other no matter what was going on between them, and something in that gave her hope. She continued to listen with a keen ear as the song continued. Another stanza rang in her ear.

    Be as if not aware
    Be mystified as this appears
Lay still, be as my will
And promise that you’ll wait to kill
And whisper that you know these things
Tell me you know these things
Show me you know these things
    About me

Wow! Who is this? Bette thought. His lyrics are amazing, Bette reached for a piece of paper and waited as the song faded, hoping the DJ would announce who it was by. A small smile creased her lips as he ran down the play list and she scribbled the song and artists name on the paper. This night has been one ***** of an eye opener and I need to get this ***** figured out quickly, Bettes mind talked to her as she stole glances of Tina through the rearview mirror. I wonder what shes thinking. God, shes still so beautiful. I have got to fix this, the lights of an oncoming car stopped her thoughts and she stiffened as she heard the back door open.

Take care T, Bette whispered, as Tina got out and closed the door. Bette opened the window, can I call you tomorrow? .

Yeah. Sure, Tina sounded defeated. She got in the cab and it took off. Bette looked over at Jenny who was still sleepy. Sorry kiddo, she said softly as she pulled off into the night.

    The next morning

Bette got up early, showered, made coffee, and powered on her laptop. She plopped herself in the hard chair and waited anxiously for it to come on. She sipped her coffee and navigated through the net until she found the lyrics to the song. She read them and eased back into the chair. Oh my goodness! She said out loud. That almost sums up our entire relationship right now. *****! That hurts, Bette ran her hands through her hair feeling a sense of dread deep within her. I have to hear this. If its anything to music as it is on paper, I can only imagine how she felt when she heard it, Bette closed the pc, got up from the chair, and went to find her shoes. She grabbed her keys and left the house, calling Kit as she got in the car.

Hey Kit! Yeah, Im good. Listen I need a favor. Have you ever heard of Maxwell and Swing Out Sister? You have? Great! Do you have any of their songs? Youve got Maxwell? Cool. And? Youre not sure? Okay. Bette kept her fingers crossed hoping for good news. Yesss! Bette grinned. All right. Cool, thanks, Bette hung up and made a U-turn to head to Kits.

Kit was waiting downstairs for her with the CDs and looking like she was in a hurry.

Hey baby girl, Kit cooed. Here ya go. Cant talk, but get at me later okay? Kit took off leaving Bette alone.

Im really starting to hate everyone coming and going, Bette mumbled, getting back in the car and she immediately put the CD in the player. She waited for the song to come on.
    Love was young
We saw beyond a sky that had no limits
Much higher than the highest star
    Beyond the furthest planet
We thought that we could change the world
    And everything in it
But time ran out of endless hours
Gave into doubt, were we just playing an endless game
    That no one ever wins

    (chorus)
    If I could run away
    Hide away
    Forget the way feel
But your memory keeps haunting me
    Convincing me its real
    Now youre not here
    Now youre not here

    Love and hate
    Left up to fate
A life we took for granted
We couldnt stop our running from the things we always wanted
    No long goodbyes
    No tears to cry
    And nothing to believe in
    But now youre gone
Well never know a love thats grown
    Time took away
All that it gave to the two of us

    (Chorus)

When our hearts were young and nights were long
Wed let the morning sun kiss our eyes open
Precious dreams that we had now they are dead and gone
The promises we made have all been broken

    If I could run away
    Hide away
    Forget the way I feel
But your memory keeps haunting me
    Convincing me its real
    Now youre not here
    Now youre not here

    In my arms
    In my life
Lovin you, is just a memory
    Now youre not here
    Now youre not here
With me now, in my arms, in my mind, in my life

Tears welled in Bettes eyes and she instantly understood it. Their entire relationship flashed through her mind and it made her entire body ache. The melancholy sound of the singers voice sounded like Tinas exhausted breaths and Bette prayed that it was not too late. She dialed Tinas number.

Hello? Tina was still asleep and she was groggy from the medicine shed taken.

T, its Bette, she paused. Im sorry to wake you, Bette felt bad for calling so early.

Tina adjusted herself in the bed. Whats up?

Uhm, I just listened to that song, the sound of Tinas heavy breathing made Bette yearn for her. Its really sad T and so am I, Bette rubbed her eyes and swallowed hard. I need to see you. Will you see me? Trepidation consumed her as she tapped the steering wheel.

Tina stretched and squinted her eyes as the sun caught her face. The medicine had allowed her to sleep well and get rid of the migraine. Her body felt relaxed and an unusual calmness came over her. She looked at the time, Sure Tina replied casually.

You will? Bette blurted out, stunned that Tina said yes. Uhm, Im sorry, didnt mean to react like that. Id rather it not be at Planet. How about Lucys down near the beach?

Yeah, okay, Tina slid off the bed, walked to the window, and looked out. It was the making of a beautiful day outside and she smiled.

Can you be ready in, Bette looked at her watch. In say forty minutes?

Okay. Ill wait for you outside, Tina closed the phone.
