Tina woke the next morning with a hangover, not an incapacitating one, but a hangover none the less. Bette was sympathetic and understanding; she took care of her. She brought her aspirin, coffee and toast in bed and threw an extra blanket over the window to block the sun’s entry into the room. Then she climbed back in bed and snuggled up with her.
“Thanks baby. I don’t deserve you” Tina spoke to her.
“That’s what I’m constantly telling myself where you’re concerned.”
“I love you.”
“And I love you sweetheart. More than I ever thought possible.”
They spent the rest of the weekend together in a state of bliss. Neither of them had ever been happier.
Bette returned home Sunday evening, thus ending their week of pleasure. That night, for both of them, was even harder than most. They had gotten so used to having each other right there, the emptiness was almost insurmountable. But life goes on. So neither slept much that night, but both went to work Monday like the rest of the world.
Bette kept Tina apprised of the fact that she was still getting phone calls at work from Stephanie. She also noted that Stephanie must have gotten a scanner because she would occasionally drive by when Bette was out on a call somewhere.
Bette was on patrol one night a few weeks later when she was dispatched to a fight with weapons. She was the first on scene, as numerous suspects took off running. Bette gave chase to two that she recognized as being habitual felons and general troublemakers in the community. She cornered them in the backyard of a residence and they refused to comply with her orders. They both rushed at her and the fight was on.
Tina called Bette to see how her night was going. After several rings, Bette finally answered, “Hey babe.” Her voice sounded strained, her breathing was labored, she was having trouble talking.
“Baby, are you ok?”
“I’m fine T.” Tina knew something was not right.
“Miss Porter, we need to get you into x-ray right away!” a strange voice interrupted their conversation.
