    Vieux Carré (Chapter 1)

    Chapter 1

Bette made her way to The Planet for her morning ritual of chicory coffee,  beignets, and banter with Alice, Shane, and Kit.

Her sister’s cafe was a bewitching two story French Colonial set one block  from Jackson Square and two blocks from Bourbon Street. Wall-to-wall French  doors, that were always wide open, made up the entire store front on both  floors. The original handcrafted wrought iron balcony over looked the bustling  street below. Hammered copper topped wet bars graced both levels.  Hardwood oak floors underfoot and raw brick walls. Outback a large stage and  water fountain occupied the covered patio. It was the epitome of French  Quarter architectural charm.

”Porter! Hurry, sit, sit, sit…” Alice squealed before Bette could even step over  the threshold.

Rolling her eyes, “what is it, Al? Must you always be so loud?”

”Um, duh, how long have you known me? I can’t help that I’ve missed my  BFF!” Alice squealed.

”Al, we just saw each other yesterday!” Bette exclaimed.

”Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever! Now sit your ass down so we can get down to  business.”

Shane sat with her hands clasped behind her head, staring up at the ceiling  fan, ignoring her obnoxious friend. She glaced at Bette and smirked, “S’up, B”.

”Morning, Shaney” Bette ruffled Shane’s wild hair and pulled out a chair, sitting  between her 2 friends “Now what’s this business you’re blabbering about?  What kind of business do WE have, Alice?”

Alice shot Bette an incredulous look “Love, Porter. The business of love!”

”Really? Are you finally going to opening a brothel, Al? Shall we call you  Madame Big Mouth of the South?” Bette grinned.

Alice flicked powdered sugar from her plate toward Bette “Shut up, Ass! I’m  talking about you.”

”Moi?” Bette pointed at herself and chuckled. “Shane, what is YOUR friend  going on about now?”

Shane shrugged and sighed, “you know how she is, she thinks everyone has a  ’Soul Mate’ and it is her job to find said soul mate for everyone…including  you.”

”Yeah, well, it’s true, although it seems I’m better suited at finding them for  others rather than myself. Speaking of….Shane, where is Carmen, anyway?”  Alice spoke wiggling her eyebrows.
