The aroma of sweet magnolia drifted through the humid spring night. A warm breeze blew in over the muddy river. The lights of the twin spans glistened through the patchy fog. It was a beautiful city. A wild city. A romantic city. Historical, eclectic, diverse, and forgiving. She sat out on the wrought iron balcony absorbing the essence of the city she now called home.

She fell in love with New Orleans years ago while attending one of her sisters ‘come-back’ shows. She instantly fell in love with the charm that is the ‘Big Easy’. The food, the hospitality, the culture, the architecture. She returned as often as possible to visit her sister and friends that over the years became family to her. Kit had taken up residence there working successfully as a jazz singer and eventually opening a jazz cafe in the heart of French Quarter.

A year and a half had passed since she caught her girlfriend of 4 years in bed with another woman. In their bed. She was devastated. She thought she had a future with Jodie. Sure, they had their problems. Jodie was narcissistic and Bette was controlling. She had never been one to commit to a monogamous relationship prior to meeting the sculptor, but the passion they shared for art was intoxicating. She moved from Chicago to New York to be with the artist. This time she thought she had may have found ‘the one’. She had never been so wrong.

Several months of therapy, analyzing, and obsessing over the shattered relationship she finally determined she would not take her back no matter how much Jodie pleaded. Bette was the embodiment of loyalty. Jodie had broken the one the thing she held most dear…TRUST. She felt comfortable with the time she had taken to process and heal her wounded heart and although she loved New York it no longer held any significance for her. She longed to be with family, with her sister in city that always embraced her soul.

Her career did not suffer an ounce. Actually it launched it to heights she never dreamed possible. Bette Porter Gallery, NOLA was beaming with success. She was able to book shows that were usually reserved for only Fine Art museums. The most prominent artist in the industry were knocking down her door for a chance to show in her space. Bette was in her element.  Living in a city she loved, with a career that impassioned her, and not to mention there were no shortage of women. My god…the women here were like no other. Exotic, sultry, sassy, charming, and classy. What more could she want?

Sipping cafe au’lait, looking out at the churning currents of the Mississippi, the soft sounds of jazz enveloping her. She could not remember the last time she felt so at peace with her life. She smiled up at the stars and whispered, "ok, universe, what else have you got for me?"
