    Vignettes: Chapter 69

Tina walked around the house, picking up shoes and straightening up the odds and ends thrown on the couch. The phone was cradled between her cheek and shoulder. Bette watched her across the room as she sat at her desk, pretending to work on her laptop. Instead she was studying Tina as she gracefully moved, her body still as lean and soft as it ever had been. Bette loved Tina’s body now more than ever before if that were even possible. It didn’t make sense to her, but age had a strange effect on a person, especially a person in love. And after all these years, Bette was still very much in love. It was different, though, than when they were younger. Then, things were still new and fresh. Even after the girls were out of the toddler years, things were still different. They were younger and lively. Not that they weren’t now, but their bodies looked different. Wrinkles and graying hair were inevitable, even for Bette Porter. But looking at Tina, Bette saw so much more than a simple love. She saw years of work, passion, and dedication. The lines on Tina’s skin were etched with Bette’s life.

Tina quickly glanced at Bette who suddenly looked down at her computer. She started typing to prove she was actually getting work done.

“Your mother?” Tina asked into the phone as she watched Bette pretend to work. “Your mother is apparently trying to deceive me into believing she’s hard at work on her laptop.”

Bette peeked from behind the screen and scowled. Tina raised an accusatory eyebrow.

“See you soon.” Tina hung up the phone and said, “Huh.”

“Huh? See you soon? Who were you talking to, T?”

    “Our daughter.”

“Zoe’s coming home? Is everything ok?” Bette asked.

“Not Zoe, our other daughter. Dakota’s coming over for dinner.”

“Our long lost daughter? To what do we owe the pleasure of her company mid-week? She only comes around about once a month if that.”

“I think it has something to do with that box in the corner.” Tina grinned and pointed to the box where Dakota’s black bra hid.

    1. You have an amazing talent and the way you write just leaves a happy tingly feeling in my heart. You truely are gifted and as always I loved the chapter. Can’t wait fot the next one…

    2. Fareast,You have been missed. You always create real beauty of the simplest moments of life. A family cuddling on the couch, a hand squeeze for support, some playful banter between two lovers, mock shock and indignation at a cheeky comment. These events are things that occur in all our lives and added such resonance to your masterpiece.Thank you so much for taking me along for the ride.Your Loyal Fan.

    3. With a few well placed words you create such depth and history with these characters that I feel as if I have been with for the entire journey. Dakota’s love for her parents is evident, but their proximity to her new found feelings for Julianne was even moreso. I could feel her expectation, anticipation and excitement. Very nicely penned.Lovely, lovely story.
