    Walking After You ch. 9

When Bette got home that evening, after a day of sleep-walking through the motions, she came home to an empty house. Which in itself was not unusual. With Tina taking night classes at the community college, Bette was used to cooking dinner for herself and leaving a plate in the refrigerator for Tina. Bette remembered how in the beginning, she had moped and languished, weighed by a feeling of loneliness as she wandered in and out of the many rooms of the house. She would usually stay up to wait for Tina, no matter how long her day had been or how bone-weary she was.

That evening, Bette walked straight into the bedroom, dropped her purse on the bed, and changed out of her pantsuit into a comfortable pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt. She checked her cellphone, the second time in an hour, then moved to the home office to check her email. After reading and responding to some emails from artist friends, she sat in front of the TV and absently browsed the channels. She kept her cellphone nearby, checking once again in case she missed any calls or messages. She did all these on automatic pilot, not allowing herself to examine what and why she was doing them. She reasoned that she had time for navel grazing in a couple of days, when she came for her next appointment with her therapist.

When Tina came home several hours later, Bette was still sitting transfixed in front of the TV. An old movie was on, and Bette seemed to be utterly engrossed in it. Tina spotted her and shrugged to herself. She was in no mood for conversation anyway.

She had several assignments to complete and a paper to write. Sure, they weren’t due until next week, but Tina was determined to make up for lost time. She had spent so many years away from school that it was a struggle for her to meet the requirements. A part of her scoffed that she did not need to read chapters of material on business administration when she had practically built a business empire by herself. The voice neglected to mention that most of her profit came from working on her back. Nonetheless, Tina wanted to get her degree. She wanted a diploma of her own to hang next to Bette’s numerous ones in the study.

    1. How about Spinal Tap? Very strange movie but it was kind of addictive. This was a sad update. They’re drifting dangerously in opposite directions. Bette will lose a true love if she goes back to Candace.

    2. Elton John (still) rocks! Hey, Lamentamini, I just did a quiz on some site and turns out, I have the personality of one Rupert Giles. Bloody hell. So, being an unimaginative British librarian type, I need your help. What, pray tell, should your prize be?!

    3. Wow! So it’s not as obscure a reference as I thought :D The prize goes to… Lamentamini for giving the full title :D Sammer gets a special award for first comment and almost correct answer. Now I need a prize…

    4. My second guess, based on it being a mockumentary about a fictitious band, was The Ruttles (I saw it years ago on VH-1). But they were mocking the Beatles which obviously weren’t from the 80s.

    5. Bette, Bette, what are you DOING? And Tina, what are YOU doing? Hm, emphasis changes nothing, they’re both acting the same. They’re having a problem, and by doing nothing to address it, they’re risking losing everything. Good update, and more please. Thanks, 7! :)

    6. You’ve captured the demise of their relationship. It starts so insidiously just by lack of communication and lazy communication, not holding each other accountable. Excellent writing.

    7. what have you done? you’re making me nervous…candace is back and tina’s chatting excitedly with a single lesbian…i’m scared for tibette
