What is love? – Chapter 10
There were only two people in the world that Bette Porter knew she loved, her father and her sister. With them it was not a struggle to know she loved them, but it was sometimes a struggle to keep on loving them.
Bette knew she was struggling in her relationship with Tina and needed help. When they first met, Tina had stumbled physically, but Bette had been stumbling emotionally ever since.
Bette knew Kit loved her and knew her older sister would be honest and blunt. The only concern Bette had, and it was a big one, was whether or not Kit was drinking.
“Kit, this is Bette.”
“Hi, baby sis. ” Kit answered, happy to hear from her younger half-sister. Kit had left a message on Bette’s machine several days before but hadn’t heard anything.
“How about dinner tonight?” suggested Bette.
“What time and where?” Kit was pleased at Bette’s call and the dinner invitation because their relationship had been stormy. Although Bette didn’t know this, Kit had taken a long-term singing engagement in Los Angeles to have the opportunity to be around her.
Kit was ten years older than Bette and was the product of Melvin Porter’s first marriage. When her dad had met Bette’s mother, he had gotten a divorce. He married Maxine, Bette’s mom, and Bette was born a few months later. Kit didn’t see her half-sister often at first because she lived with her mother, but she always thought Bette a bright, charming child.
She moved back with Melvin when her mother died. Bette was six and she was sixteen and already involved with trying to start a career in music. She became Bette’s idol and the beautiful child followed her everywhere, or tried. When she sang professionally, Bette was sometimes allowed to see a performance. Kit always introduced Bette from the audience to her younger sister’s delight..
Bette worshipped Kit until the drinking started. Then Kit started to break promises or just ignore Bette. The worst was when Bette saw Kit drunk. Slowly the worshipful look disappeared from Bette’s eyes and was replaced with uncertainty and hurt.
They had reconnected a few times as the years passed. Sometimes it was good. but when Kit descended into the bottle, it was bad. Kit was very skillful at disguising the amount she had drunk but Bette had learned how to recognize, even over the phone, when Kit had been drinking .

Kit said something very true when something comes easy not just Bette but most everyone dont give the worth and value and sometimes it need to lose to see how much someone worth and how worng you were and Bette maybe is one of those peoples and Kit said little but said enough about Bette stop playing with Tina if is not what she wants…ok i only ask you a thing dont break Tinas heart..lol..another amazing chapter post soon thanks a lot :o)

pancha. excellent. poor bette. does she need a lab class in love. she cant give her up, well why would that be??? what a doof. but shes not a yalie for nothing. thanks.
Good chapter. Kit is great, she know how to tell you about your feeling. Now all Bette do is show Tina she love her and ask Tina to move in with her. Ok let see what’s next, thanks!
” And Bette’s experience with her family had taught her that she could really get hurt if she were vulnerable.”
Good observation!
heehee, I hope Bette will try to break up with Tina and then realize she is in love with her already. Haha, shouldn’t affect you. Please go on. =)
Pancha, I love this story. Bette indeed does not recognize love when it is starring her right in the face. That’s what happens when one does not or has not felt that kind of love before.
If I haven’t commented yet, then let me please tell you, that I have been reading every chapter, and am truly enjoying this story. You have captured Bette’s struggle with her feelings, and maded them very real, and honest. Thanks!!
Just caught up with the last few chapters, love this story. Poor Bette, first love and she doesn’t even know it. It’ll come to her, maybe at Milk someone will flirt with Tina and then BAM she’ll get it. Thank God for you guys that write for fan fic, cos without you I don’t know what we’d do, and if S3 turns out to be even 1/2 of the crap we’ve been reading will be tuning in here on Sunday nights instead.
Kit’s words really hit home. Bette is too afraid to admit her own feelings….throw some light to her. Bette need to see what she’s feeling. great one,pancha..great one.
Pancha, this chapter was kind of therapeutic in some ways…you touched on alot of the things that I have struggled with in my own life when it comes to love and life. I hope Bette will be able to recognize that the feelings she has for Tina go deeper than anything she has ever experienced before and she should continue to explore and embrace those feelings. Thanks for this smart and insightful chapter!
very realistic portrayal of Bette’s struggle with the L topic. thanks and am looking forward to more.
Bette needs to go and Class101 in love. If she love Tina tell her if not let her go before Tina get really hurt. thanks
