When You Least Expect It – Chapter 8
The salty sweet scent of breakfast wafted into Tina’s room, filling her nose and slowly rousing her from a deep sleep. Almost instantly she felt the intense throbbing in her head and dared to open her eyes, the warm yet bright light of the shining sun only adding to her pain.
She groaned and immediately pulled the covers over her face, groaning even louder when that bit of quick movement further increased her headache. Rolling to her side in an attempt to assuage the ache, Tina was hit with an intense wave of nausea. She groaned again.
Hangovers sucked.
Tina knew she shouldn’t have gotten so drunk, it was a miracle she even got home-
She froze, her heart stopped.
Home. Was she home? If so, how did she get there?
She immediately tugged the covers off her head, ignoring her headache as she took in the room she had slept in. Tina let out a deep sigh of relief and settled back into the mattress. She was home, safe in her own roo-
Her heart stopped again.
Angie. Where was Angie?
Tina sprang to life, the throbbing in her head a thing of the past as she kicked the covers off her half naked body. She had left Angelica with her babysitter the night before but for the life of her, Tina couldn’t remember relieving the woman. She couldn’t remember seeing Angie’s beautiful, innocent face when she came home either.
She burst out of her room just as something metal and something plastic hit the floor. The distant sound filled her ears and sent a chill down her spine.
Acting on instinct, Tina grabbed the first thing she could find: a large picture frame containing a photo of a school of fish. It had never been Tina’s favorite thing in the world but it had been a gift from Kevin’s mother and Tina had never been able to bring herself to throw it away. Now however, Tina held it high over her head as she crept her way down the hall, ready to rescue her daughter from the kidnappers she was so convinced waited for her around the corner.
