    White Lie 1

Bette glanced at her watch repeatedly, wondering where Tina could possibly be. Just when she had reached her limit, and was about to pick up her cell to track her down, Tina rushed into the waiting room outside the office of the Director of Admissions. She was breathless and more than a little frazzled at her tardiness.

“I know, I know, I’m sorry I’m late,” Tina offered before Bette could even say a word. “I couldn’t get away as soon as I wanted and the 405 was crazy.”

“This represents our daughter’s future you know,” Bette admonished, as if she had never had occasion to be late.

Tina chose to ignore the comment rather than react angrily prior to going in for the interview. She took a seat beside Bette on one of the all-business wooden chairs. Her silence aptly communicated her displeasure at being chastised.

Bette placed her hand on Tina’s as it rested on the arm of the chair.

“I’m sorry. I was just worried because you’re never late.”

Tina saw the will of her effort in Bette’s eyes. She turned her hand over and gave her silent acceptance of the heartfelt apology by squeezing Bette’s hand. At that moment, the Director’s door opened.

“Ms. Porter, Ms. Kennard?” the Director looked at them as she spoke. “Please come in.”

She held the door open for them to enter her office.

“Jackie Wentworth,” she held out her hand as she introduced herself. Tina and Bette introduced themselves in turn.

“Have a seat,” she waved them toward the chairs set up around a low coffee table. “Make yourselves comfortable.”

Bette pulled out a chair for Tina and then seated herself.

The director made her way around to another chair on the other side of the table.

“The board has read through the application you submitted on behalf of Angelica,” she said. “Your interest in our art curriculum was noted.”

“The basics of education will be covered anywhere,” Bette started. “It’s important for me, and I think it’s important for Tina, to allow Angie an avenue for creativity, especially at such an impressionable age.”

Tina nodded her agreement, finding it unusual that Bette hadn’t just spoken for both of them. She really was working on her faults. The director spoke again.

    1. Aww. I feel like this one is going to ba really good. So happy to see you posting something. Your Bette and Tina stuff just hits the nail on the head every single time. I’m a fan.. not going to lie. Can’t wait for the next installment.

    2. Yep your writing has always held me captive so seeing this one and reading it I am hooked already…. please post real soon. And big thanks for sharing

    3. Okay this is how my weird mind works…I am reading along and as always with your writing I am totally hooked from the very first sentence…then I realize that you are just starting this story and I won’t be able to read it from start to finish today. I stop reading and think, “oh crap! I’m going to have to wait for her to post again dammit!!” Well, disappointment sets in, the day starts to turn gloomy…….BUT, then all of a sudden I realize that I still have two pages of THIS chapter to read and enjoy! Suddenly the sun comes back out, and I giggle with joy. Just like that my happiness at seeing your name returns, and I continue reading this fantastic chapter like nothing has happened. All is right with my fan fic world again because JustKeepSwimming has posted!! LOL Told you I had a weird mind! Thanks…and I am so glad to see you back!!

    4. Very interested on how bette and tina are going to handle this retreat! yes and parents will do anything to get there into school they feel is the best.

    5. I just sended my kid to a church school. them when they got older to public school. Love that they will be going on a retreat together. Jodie can take a flying leaf back to her witch hut. thaks

    6. Hello jks…This is my first time reading one of your stories, and I really enjoyed the first chapter. I wonder will Jodi really like the idea of Bette going to retreat with Tina? But maybe she’ll understand that B&T wants the greatest education for their little girl, even though Jodi doesn’t like children–maybe she won’t mind. Can’t wait for the next chapter, and thanks for the good read. : )-AKcb

    7. B&T’s togetherness is obviously presented with the best of intentions… but where this white lie leads them is another matter entirely. As always, jks, it’s a treat to read your writing, thanks for the post.

    8. My parents didn’t travel in such rarified financial circuits, nor was there such a thing as pre-school when I was Angie’s age. Besides that, my father had no problem with “just saying no” long before Nancy Reagan co-opted the phrase. Whatever, it’s nice to see Bette and Tina on the same page about something. Could this possibly be the start of something?

    9. It’s great to have you back. I’ve missed your sensitive contributions. This is a nice extrapolation on the preschool interview–very interesting.

    10. A weekend retreat sounds just what the doctor ordered. I agree that parents need to be more involved in their child’s education. Not sure about a retreat but definitely they need to be part of the process.

    11. Hello JKS, I must say that I have loved your writing since I first discovered this site, you have such a grace and intelligence to your storytelling allowing for the complex emotions of your characters to spill out between the many layers you weave. I can feel Tina’s excitement at the possibilities that this might present for her and Bette (and Angelica) and you can see Bette desires shining through, it didn’t feel like she was to worried about how Jodi would react and in my mind that has me thinking she might enjoy this quality to reaffirming her family. Your are an absolutely amazing story teller and I cannot wait to see where you take this. Sincerely, JC

    12. Maybe this retreat will be just what they need t see they are ment to be. Hopefully Jodi pitches a fit and makes some asinine remark about Tina going to the retreat alone seeing as she is really Angelica’s mom and Bette was only her partner at the time she had her. PPS

    13. Swimmie, it’s so good to see you back giving us another great story. Oh the possibilities of this one. Can hardly wait to see the next chapter. Always enjoy your stories because you love “our girls.” Who cares what Jodie thinks. Yea swimmie. Post when you can, we shall be waiting.

    14. i swear to god i must be on drugs. i missed your new years day post and now ive missed but found out much more quickly that i missed a post. so the short of it is yippee!!! i did go to pre school, but nothing like that. cant wait to see where you take us. thx

    15. It took me longer to start this story after finishing “As it should be”- New Years Eve celebration. I think I am going to enjoy the ride. Bette and Tina on a retreat together, could be interesting.
