With a little help from my friends-chapter 30
Candice was sitting there with the engine running, she was in a daze and didn’t notice George walking up. George walked over to the passenger seat and opened the door. Candice didn’t look up thinking maybe it was Bette climbing into the car. George jumped in and looked at her.
George: “What are you doing here?” she said in a surprisingly calm voice.
Candice: “Get out of my car please. I need to talk to Bette.”
George: “You and I both know that isn’t going to happen. She and Tina are back together. Besides you know that I have no problem getting arrested again if I have to.” Candice didn’t say anything. “Yeah, you should be going now” she said with a stern voice as she got out of the car.
Candice pulled away just as George closed the door. George watched her drive away and shook her head. She actually started to feel sorry for her but that didn’t mean that she wouldn’t try to stop her at all costs. George turned and started to head up the walkway towards the porch. As she was walking up the steps the front door opened. Kathy and Bette were on their way outside to sit on the porch.
Bette: “Hey. What are you doing up this early?” she said picking up the newspaper.
George: “Eh, I was just in the neighborhood.” she said taking a seat on the step.
Kathy: “Are you excited for your birthday tomorrow?”
George: “Negative.”
Kathy: “Why not, your going to be the big 2-4″ she said with a smile.
George: “In case you have forgotten, the day of by birth was cursed, nothing good will come of that day”
Bette: “You are so weird”
Kathy: “Yeah you need to stop with that nonsense”
George: “It’s not nonsense. It’s the truth.” she said standing up. “Is Tina here?”
Bette: “Yeah, she’s still sleeping though”
George: “Well I guess it’s time for her wakeup call” she said trotting off into the house.
George trotted down the hallway yelling “wakie wakie Teener.” Tina moaned and rolled over. George ran into the room and jumped onto the bed.
Tina: “What do you want?” she said slowly and angerly
George: “I saw Holly last night”
Tina’s eyes shot open and she sat strait up.
Tina: “Are you serious? What happened?”
George: “Oh im serious. I think maybe I should quit drinking for a while too.”
Tina: “Oh no, don’t tell me you slept with her!”
George: “No, I didn’t sleep with her”
Tina: “What is that supposed to mean. Who did you sleep with?”
George looked around to see if anyone was near and blurted out “Alice” before she lost her nerve.
Tina didn’t respond, she sat there speachless with her mouth wide open.
George: “What should I do?”
Tina: “I don’t know. How the ***** did that happen?”
George took a deep breath and told Tina everything she remembered from the night before and how she left in the morning. She wasn’t sure if she actually had feelings for Alice. Tina was still in shock and couldn’t think of any advice to offer her sister.

Alice slowly started to wake up. As she began to stir she noticed that George wasn’t there. She sat up and looked around, soon she relized George wasn’t even in the apartment. “*****” she muttered as she climbed out of bed. She walked over to the phone and dialed George’s cell, but she didn’t answer. She called to talk to Bette but TIna answered the phone. Bette had already left for work, and Alice needed to talk to someone. She too told Tina about the previous night. Tina pretended that she knew nothing about the situation. Alice spent all day thinking about what happened, she was trying to sort through her feelings. Soon she felt herself missing George, she really wanted to talk to her.

George arrived at home and threw herself onto her bed. She looked at her phone and saw six missed calls from Alice. She didn’t know what to do. Usually when she is lost of confused she ignores the situation, which is what she did. She started to drift off to sleep when her phone began to ring. She looked at the caller ID and saw a number she didn’t know. “Hello?” she said. It was Holly. She called George and asked her to meet her for lunch. For some reason George really wanted to see her so she agreed. They agreed on a neutral greeting place and George hung up the phone. She sat up and looked around “*****” she said sifting through the pile of clothes on the floor. She threw on a pair of cargo pants and a track jacket and headed out the door. Holly was waiting for her when she arrived. They found a nice little cafe sat down. Conversating was flowing smoothly but George was finding herself uninterested. It was odd for her because she used to love to listen to Holly talk about nothing for hours. She began to think about Alice more and more as the day went on. They left the cafe and began to walk down the street.
Holly: “Let’s go watch the sun set. I haven’t been to the beach in a long time”
George: “Uh..yeah ok” she said looking down at her watch.
They walked over and sat down in the warm sand. George leaned back on her elbows and closed her eyes taking in the late day iar.
Holly: “You seem to be doing well. Im glad your doing everything you wanted to” she said leaning back on her arm.
George: “Yeah. It seems to be working.”
They sat in silence for a moment. George noticed Holly getting a strange look in her eye. She saw it coming, she was going to kiss her. Sure enough Holly started to lean in and George froze. Holly pressed her lips against George’s and stopped breifly waiting for a response. George started to kiss her back then quickly pulled away. Thoughts of Alice started flooding her mind.
George: “I can’t do this. I can’t get sucked back into your little world. I have finally found my place and im happy there.” she said getting up.
Holly: “George, wait” she said bringing herself to her feet.
George: “No, I gotta go.” with that she was gone, heading back to her car.
She had dialed Alice four times before giving up. She jumped in her car and headed over to Tina’s. When she pulled up she saw Alice’s mini parked outside. George turned of the engine and got out, she jogged up to the door and stopped. She took a deep breath and knocked. When Tina opened the door her expression was clear. “You need to do something about this” she wispered as she stepped aside. Alice was sitting on the couch, half sad and half angry. George didn’t know what to do, she frowned at Tina and walked over to Alice. Alice looked up at George with a face that made her stop dead in her tracks. Alice stood up and grabbed her bag without saying a word and walked towards the door. “I’ll call you later” she said to Tina as she walked out.
George: “What’s going on?” she said sitting down.
Tina: “You need to do something about that. She is really upset.”
George: “Is she really?”
Tina: “Uh, yeah. Im getting the feeling that she really likes you. From what I gather she saw last night as a door opening, she thought it’s what you both wanted.”
George: “How do I get myself into these things?” she said rubbing her temple. “To be truthfull, I do like her. It just happened so fast ya know. How do I make this better?”
Tina: “Go talk to her. Do something. I can’t be dealing with her craziness right now.”
George stared at the coffee table for a second then a smile fell over her face. Tina looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
George: “I know what to do.” she said standing up.
Tina: “ok”
George: “Alright, im going to go. I’ll call you.” she said giving her sister a smile then she walked out the door.

Alice arrived home and ploped down on the couch. She stared at the wall for a while letting her mind wonder. Soon enough she grew bored and reached for her little wooden box. After a while she was nice a stoned, she layed down on the couch and closed her eyes. Her eyes wern’t closed for more than five seconds when her peace was interupted. Their was loud music coming from outside. “What the ***** is that?” she said as she sat up looking around. She got up and walked over to her window. There stood George imitating ‘the scene’ from the movie say anything. She was standing in front of her car holding up a boom box. Of course the song that was blaring was Peter Gabriel’s ‘In You Eyes’. Alice opened the window and leaned out.
Alice: “What the ***** do you think you are doing?”
George: “It worked for John Cusack” she quickly replied as she set the boombox down.
Alice: “Actually no it didn’t.” she yelled down.
George: “Eventually it did. Come on Alice talk to me” she said noticing her cute idea was failing.
Alice: “I don’t really want to talk to you right now.”
George: “Come on. I can stay here all night.”
Alice: “suit yourself.” she said shutting the window.
She closed the curtain and walked away. George shrugged her sholders and found a semi-comfortable spot on the lawn and sat down. Minutes later it began to pour. She sat outside for a good half hour before giving up. Alice watched her get up and drive away. She really wanted to let her in but felt it was best to let her pay for being stupid.
George figured Bette was the best person to talk to about Alice so she made her way over to the CAC. She made her way through the doors and then to Bette’s office. Bette was ear deep in paperwork and didn’t notice George walk in.
George: “Hey.” she said shaking herself off.
Bette: “Christ, what happened to you” she said looking at a completely soaked George.
George: “El Nino” she said pushing a peice of wet hair out of her face.
