    Would She?

    TINA

When she recalls that period in her life, she likens it to a piece of the hard candy she’d often enjoyed as a child. Round, colorful, flavorful, sweet on the outside, and sour at the center.

Twenty-five years had come and gone, and since then Tina had married a wonderful man, given birth to a son, moved to another part of the state, taken up pottery and yoga, leased a Lexus, and purchased a beach house in Anguilla; her daughter had made her a grandmother, and even with all of those life changes, her heart remained the same. Her heart remained with her.

Tina wished she could say that she thought of Bette only when she heard Etta James belt out “At Last,” or in the dead of night, midsummer, when it rained or snowed, or when the sun shone so brightly, it made the day too beautiful to regard.

    Bette had been beautiful.

Tina wished she could say that her mind reached back to those times only when life was deranged and miserable, but that would be an utter lie because she thought about Bette even when she was happy and wrapped up tight in her husband’s arms.

She thought about Bette when she held her newborn son to her breast, pulled her fingers through her hair, when she sighed, sneezed, breathed.

    Tina thought about Bette.

Tina found Bette on her mind when she was enclosed by silence, overwhelmed by noise, when she sat, walked, stood in line at the neighborhood bank.

    Fuck! She thought about her.

And Tina asked herself, would she leave? Would she leave everything she had thought she ever wanted and had finally gotten? Would Tina put all she had behind her if she opened the door one day and found Bette standing there, empty-handed but with a full heart?

Would Tina leave everything and everyone she had if Bette opened her mouth and simply said,

“Hello, I’m sorry. I love you.”

    Would Tina go?

    Fuck, she believes she would.

    BETTE

Bette stood in the window of her and Candace’s home. The logs and the fireplace crackled behind her as she sipped her tea and watched her neighbors stroll up and down the streets.
