You break it, you replace it – Chapter 10

Bette stood with the palm of her hand resting flat against the closed door to the bathroom. Her initial plan was to barrel straight in and take Tina in her arms but her intuition called for restraint. Bette knew that she still had a lot of work to do, a lot of ground to cover but she was more determined than ever to get this right. She couldn’t be sure of how Tina would react to her suddenly being there after all that had gone on today, let alone the last month.

There had been so much anger, so much pain between them that there were no guarantees and Bette couldn’t assume that she was going to be welcomed back with open arms. She heard the shower stop and retreated from the door, suddenly nervous about seeing her partner. ‘God what a day’ she thought, shrugging her jacket off and throwing it over the back of a chair in the corner. She quietly slipped off her shoes and stripped out of the rest of her suit before changing into her navy cargos and a maroon singlet figuring that she may as well get comfortable before whatever was going to happen started happening.

Tina willed her heavy limbs to obey and she slowly dressed herself into some old pajama pants of Bette’s and a pale blue camisole top. She leant both hands on the sink for support and raised her head to look in the mirror. The reflection held a woman tired and ravaged by the day, Tina just couldn’t bring herself to care, none of it mattered. There had been so many little things that were important yesterday, they had dissolved into obscurity when Alice had told her…Tina willed herself to say the words, to make it real but the words stuck in her throat and refused to budge.

“***** Tina, what have you done?” She questioned her reflection. She felt empty, desolate, there was nothing ahead but more of this agony for as far as her mind dared to venture. More tears began to taint her hollow features.

Bette found herself at the door once again, hearing the words, hearing Tina try to catch breath through the tears. ‘Enough’ she thought ‘this has to end’. She took a deep breath and opened the bathroom door. Tina stood leaning over the sink, her head bowed, lost in thoughts so deep that she didn’t hear the door. Bette stood for a second, dismayed at how frail Tina appeared. Bette moved forward and Tina’s head snapped up, suddenly aware of her surroundings. Her eyes locked on Bette’s reflection in the mirror and pure terror gripped her body.

    1. You take my breath away every time I read this story. You really are good at this… I love that Tina is finally seeing the light, that her and Bette belong together…

    2. I forgot about Alice drinking…and now she’s driving. Well, I hope nothing bad happens.

By the way, I thought Bette was going to leave the bedroom and Tina was going to come out of the shower and see Bette’s clothes laying there & run to look for her. I like the direction you took with the story better though. As usual, GREAT writing!!
