    Young Folks – Chapter 13A

Just in a blink of an eye, almost four months had gone by in a flash ever since the new semester had begun.

Over the last four months or so, Helena had grown closer to Bette and as well as with the rest of the gang. Both of them quickly grew to become best friends. They would stay up late to wait and help out the other to complete their assignment. They would go out for morning walks and runs together at the beach whenever they could. They would meet up during their lunch breaks to have lunch together. They were practically like an inseparable couple, which unfortunately, they were not.

But it wasn’t like Bette was complaining. Although she wasn’t able to call Helena her girlfriend or confess to her how she truly feels, she was pretty much contented with being able to see Helena every day, hang out with her every day, and share about her hopes, dreams and secrets. However, there was an issue or two that irked her. Gay girls and straight guys were always hitting on Helena and that grinded her nerves.

Thank goodness for her that Helena had never agreed to go out with any of those girls. And, thank goodness for her that things never seemed to work out right when Helena went out on dates with those guys.

Bette was ashamed to admit it but whenever Helena goes out on a date with some douche bag, she would cross her fingers tightly and secretly hoped that the date would turn out awful. This little ritual that Bette performed had worked every single time, until Elliot came along or as what Helena calls him, El.

Bette hasn’t officially met El. Probably because she had always pretended to be asleep or in the bathroom whenever El had walked Helena back up to the apartment and always made up excuses whenever Helena wanted to invite her out to meet him.

Although she had never met him, she had heard quite a lot about him like how he’s a final year student, majoring in environmental design. And stuff like how sweet, chivalrous, sensitive and blahblahblah he was. On occasions when their conversation was somehow veered into the topic of El, Bette would try her very best to listen attentively but it seemed to be like an impossible task. Her stomach would start churning and a surge of jealousy and annoyance would wash over her. A part of her wished that Helena wouldn’t confide in her about El but the other part of her was glad that Helena felt comfortable enough to talk about El to her.

    1. Bette needs to tell Helena how she feels and that she should move out because it’s to painful to be around her. Bette should also explain to Helena, if she wants to be a coward and live her life for her parents then that’s her business but she can’t pretend to be supportive. I honestly think Bette needs to sever her ties with Helena and move on instead of torturing herself watching Helena date others. It’s kinda like that song, sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.

    2. B has to tell H how she feels or let her go!!! It is entirely too difficult to be friends with someone you are in love with and watch them move on without you!!!

    3. hmmm… Appropriate part to stop? No~ It’s just a cliffhanger… It’s interesting now. I wonder if Bette would actually muster enough courage to confess her feelings or just try and be happy for Helena. I hope this El is as good as Helena sets him out to be though. More drama this way :P Love your writing and am totally looking forward for more :) It took me long enough to leave a comment but I’ve been catching up on this lately and I really like it

    4. awww, poor Bette…maybe Bette should find someone to take her attention off Helena for awhile…of course, at the end of the day, Helena and Bette should get together…but there’s nothing wrong with humping around for the mean time, right? lol…ppvs
