Freeheld, starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page, opens October 2.

Those two names, alone, playing a lesbian couple, will make any self respecting lesbian drool while running to the movie theater.

However, this is going to be a hard, hard movie. As in heartbreakingly bad.

It’s a true story based on a lesbian couple in New Jersey and their fight for survivor partner benefits, pre-marriage equality. The story was first the subject of the award winning documentary,  also titled Freeheld.

The story has now been made into a major motion picture with major star power. In addition to Julianne Moore and Ellen Page, Steve Carrell, Michael Shannon, and Josh Charles.

The official description from the official site:
Based on the Oscar®-winning short documentary and adapted by the writer of Philadelphia, Freeheld is the true love story of Laurel Hester [Julianne Moore] and Stacie Andree [Ellen Page] and their fight for justice. A decorated New Jersey police detective, Laurel is diagnosed with cancer and wants to leave her hard earned pension to her domestic partner, Stacie. However the county officials, Freeholders, conspire to prevent Laurel from doing this. Hard-nosed detective Dane Wells [Michael Shannon], and activist Steven Goldstein [Steve Carell], unite in Laurel and Stacie’s defense, rallying police officers and ordinary citizens to support their struggle for equality.
