They say a lot of what we learn and how we behave comes from movies and television. That can be good, or bad depending of course on what you are watching. One of my favorite things about the sci-fi and supernatural genre is that despite the enemy that is always trying to kill someone, they often preach peace, understanding and a “can’t we all just get along” mantra. Most notably is Star Trek, whose whole premise was peaceful exploration of the universe and you know, Kirk’s goal of adding a notch on the bed post for every species he meets. But what is a science fiction adventure without adventurous sex, right?
Okay, so that may be a different conversation. Anyway, point being, Canada’s Lost Girl goes a long way promoting the same ideas of working together for a harmonious future, the journey of characters finding their way despite the odds and the understanding and embracing one another’s differences. They also give us a whole cast of strong, intelligent, loyal (to whatever their cause) women. Yes, it has plenty of sex, too, but with that in mind, it also applauds no labels for whomever you choose to be with. (Even though some networks *cough SyFyUS* enjoys cutting out scenes that involve a deep, loving relationship between two strong women.) I digress, that’s also a topic for another time.
These lessons are in no particular order, except for the last one. If you follow me on twitter a few may sound familiar, but I like them so here we go…
Lesson #1: No body puts the succubus’s girl in a corner and lives. Your best bet is to just walk away. Hell hath no fury like an unaligned-turned-Dark Fae Queen succubus when you put your hands on her human lover.
Lesson #2: There’s never a bad time for a drink, but if you’re entertaining a Valkyrie and a tiny Russian thief, be sure to stock lots of booze. Just a note here, beware of spontaneous dance off’s to the death with these two around.
Lesson #3: Even the big, bad wolf can be a big, old softie. Once he gets past his alpha male crap, a gal may just find a trusted compadre, a decent dance partner and someone to howl at the moon with when you’re feeling blue.
Lesson #4: You never know who your bartender may turn out to be. He could be a king with more moves than Yoda who could kick your ass with a big stick or write you out of the history books.
Lesson #5: Be nice to nerds. You never know when one may decide you need a genetic makeover.
I don’t know who to credit for this meme, but it was genius!
Lesson #6: Even the smallest person can make a huge difference, as seen in 4×13. True family, whoever yours may consist of, will go to the ends of the Earth for you and then some. They are there in good times and bad. They will fight to bring you back from darkness and will celebrate your biggest victories. I sure hope Kenzi comes back soon.
Lesson #7: I don’t know if this is a lesson as much as a general fact of life. I think it’s even on Wikipedia. Ain’t nobody better than the Palmer! Really, is there anything Zoie Palmer can’t do? She’s funny as hell, so gracious and sincere. She’s got a wonderful wife and family. She can sing, dance and do fight scenes. She’s a porn queen, no not like that, but she inspires twitter accounts in honor of her hair, arms and smile, popcorn and even her lettuce. Her dramatic scenes leave you crying for days and she gets to roll around with Anna Silk. I mean come on, it’s not even fair to the rest of us. *Sigh*
Finally, the most important lesson I take from Lost Girl and one I feel the show strives to represent every season is this: Whoever you are, we know you and we love you. It’s okay to be who you are and love who you love. Life is hard and we don’t all come from a perfect beginning. Whether or not you know your parents, lived on the street, unintentionally became a terrorist, have a forbidden love, or you’ve forsaken others for money or power, life is also a journey and you can live the life you choose.
