Another year has gone by since we last visited with our favorite cast members of The L Word to find out what’s happening in their lives and careers after the show.
Though I no longer crave a daily dose of The L Word and TiBette, I still miss the show and I’m very grateful for my DVD’s. When the nostalgia hits me hard, all I need to do is to watch some of the best moments of season one or five (my favorite seasons by far) and all is right in my little world.
But…life is going on and our favorite cast members are moving on, as well. So, where are they now and what are they doing?
Jennifer Beals: well, it certainly seems that Jennifer is still one of the busiest cast members.
– Her The L Word Book: A photographic journal by Jennifer Beals had finally come out and you can order it here: http://www.lwordbook.com/order-books. The personalized version of the book, where you can add your own photos, will be available soon, along with the original prints of some of the photographs that appeared in the book. All proceeds are going to several charities and the price of the book is $39.95.
– Jennifer Beals will appear in Afghan Women’s Writing Project http://theloveprojectinc.com/?p=2290 on March 8. She is announced as one of the readers, along with a few other celebrities. This event is opened to public but you have to RSVP to attend.
– She just finished filming “A Night For Dying Tigers”, a movie about a dysfunctional family. You can read the blog here http://anightfordyingtigers.com/ . Jennifer talked about this movie in several interviews and she said, “I’m working right now on a film called ‘A Night for Dying Tigers’. It’s about a uniquely dysfunctional family. I play a sister-in-law, with part of the insanity but without the inherited traits … I play a woman named Melanie. It’s a wonder she’s still alive given the family that she’s married into…”
– “The Book of Eli” movie came out in January and received a lot of good reviews, especially praising Danzel’s and Gary Oldman’s characters. However, majority of the reviewers, including moi, had agreed that Jennifer Beals was exceptional in her role of Claudia. One critic didn’t recommend the movie but he also said, “The real standout in the production is Jennifer Beals. It will not be surprising if she earns larger roles from her supporting role here. First of all, unlike Mila, Beals provides a striking natural beauty. She looks like the kind of woman who looks as good without make-up as she does all dolled up. Beyond the superficial, Beals also provides the real emotional hook in the production. Washington is a stodgy, unlikeable guy. It falls to Beals to provide the emotional connection for the audience and in this role she shines. If there is anything to take from this film, it comes from her performance.” http://www.goodnewsfilmreviews.com/2010/02/book-of-eli-2010.html
The Book of Eli has been nominated for three 36th Annual Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Actor http://bit.ly/cksrlF
– Jennifer will also reprise her role as Zoe Landau on “Lie to Me” that will air the remaining episodes of season 2 sometime in the spring. According to Ausiello Files, it’s a safe bet that “Lie to Me” will be back for its third season.
– Jennifer also finished filming “The Night Before the Night Before Christmas”, a Hallmark Original Movie about a family that’s too busy to get ready for the holidays until Santa Claus mistakenly leaves the North Pole a day early and crash lands on their roof, and it’s suddenly up to the family to help save Christmas. The movie is set to premiere on Hallmark Channel in 2010 www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20091105hallmark01
– And if that is not enough, Jennifer is going to have her own Barbie doll as Alex Owens from Flashdance, dressed in the iconic leotard, leg warmers and off-shoulder sweatshirt http://thebarbiequeue.blogspot.com/2010/02/more-barbie-news.html I don’t know if Jennifer is going to be flattered, amused or horrified by this idea but I can ask her next time I see her.
Laurel Holloman:
– Auction for Maasai that Laurel recently did with her friend, Miki Turner, was a great success and Laurel twittered later that she had an offer for a few exhibitions and was also thinking about another auction. Some of the auction’s winners were invited to join Laurel and Miki for dinner in Los Angeles and it was a great event for everyone involved. You can read my report about the dinner here /2010/01/evening-with-laurel-holloman-and-miki-turner-report
– “Gigantic”, a TV show about life of the celebrity kids is going to air on TeenNick in April. Laurel is playing a mother of one of the main characters.
– One of Laurel’s official websites www.laurelholloman.net just announced that there are several wonderful surprises are coming up for the die-hard TLW fans, so keep visiting Laurel’s site or check out l-word.com as we are going to update it with the news constantly.
– Recently, Miki Turner took several new Laurel’s head shots and you can check the photos on Miki’s website http://www.mikiphoto.smugmug.com or check the IMDB page http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0391274 for new photos.
Pam Grier:
– Pam’s memoir book is coming out in just a little over a month. As she told me in our interview at L6, “April 1st is the publishing day with the Grand Central Publishing and it called ‘Foxy: My Life in Three Acts’ … It’s everything from the first when I was born … Then it talks about my life during Civil Rights Movement, all these political assassinations, civil unrest in the country. We talk about me entering into the cinematic world with all the gender issues, oppression and exploitation of women. You know, the fight, the battle, race, black, white, women, gender, big boobs, no boobs, all of that and my life up to The L Word.”
– Pam had joined the cast of “Smallville” as a villainess Agent Amanda Waller. Pam was twittering in December and January that she started filming the show already and loves it. She said in one of her tweets: my character Amanda Waller, PHD., gets to interact with all of the Smallville superheroes.
– Pam had established “The Pam Grier Legacy Fund” to help fund non-profits serving woman and youth in crisis with proceeds from her memoir.
– Pam is also going to appear at a Women’s Winter Party in Miami Beach, FL on March 3-8 (http://bit.ly/9muhF0). For more information go to http://www.shemag.com/first_feature/f_feature_main.htm
Leisha Hailey/Uh Huh Her:
– Cam and Leisha have been twittering for a while now that they are planning to do an auction to support some of their favorite charities and the band. They posted on twitter that the auction is starting on Sunday, February 21 at 5 pm and will go for a week http://myworld.ebay.com/uhhuhherofficial
– Leisha and Cam are also working on recording/mixing their second album. Their official site is down right now because they are revamping its look and contents.
– Uh Huh Her is also scheduling several concerts and shows: they have been announced for 2010 Summerfest in Houston with the Flaming Lips. Check the rest of the line-up here http://www.29-95.com/music/story/summerfest-2010-lineup-announced; they are coming to Marseille, France on April 16th. The rest of the schedule for Uh Huh Her shows will be posted soon.
– Leisha is also going to come onboard for a Q&A session for Olivia Caribbean cruise February 28-March 7 http://www.olivia.com/Travel/Trips_Western_Caribbean.aspx
Mia Kirshner:
– Appeared in several TV show, including “Cleaner”, “CSI: NY” and “Vampire Diaries”. She is also playing Lilith in “30 Days of Night: Dark Days” that is now in post-production.
– Recently returned from Malawi where she helped to organize a school in the Kachere prison. She recently twittered about it: I just heard that one of the kids from prison is going back to school now because of our little school in Kachere.
– As some of you might be aware, Mia made a book at L6 Convention and all the proceeds from that book went to help to build that school in Kachere prison. Recently, Mia sent this message out:
Hello,
This is Mia K. First of all I want to say how sorry we are that the book has taken so long to finish. The only explanation that we have is that we are perfectionists and want the book to be as good as it can possibly be. It’s taken us a while to get there and we have worked everyday on this since I left the convention. That said, thank you so much for your patience. The book will be ready to be shipped out in March. It’s called “Intimacy” and is based on the writing that I collected during the convention. It’s a tribute to love. We hope so much that you all enjoy it.
In the mean time, Mia Bohleman, who is a co-author of this book, created a little slide show to give you all an idea of what is coming. Check it out. Intimacy is now sold out, so you are the only few that will have a copy of this book. Here is the link to a preview: http://miabohleman.com/intimacy/home.php
For those of you who ordered the book at L6, Sean Harry took down your
addresses during the convention … if any of you have moved, please write to us at: www.i-live-here.com so that we can make sure that the book is in your hands. Thank you for the support … because of you, we now have a thriving program at Kachere Prison and look forward to expanding our work. I can’t wait to tell you about where we are heading with I Live Here … we really believe that stories will change the world.
I hope you all are well. Thank you for your patience and for making L6
such a memorable experience for me.
My Best, Mia.K
– Mia returns to High School with I Live Here projects http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mia-kirshner/returning-to-high-school_b_442567.html and she keeps lecturing at the universities to promote I Live Here Ambassador Program.
Marlee Matlin:
– Marlee is producing a documentary series on a family with deaf parents and hearing and deaf kids, kind of like “Little People, Big World”. It’s in the editing stages right now.
– Marlee is also appearing in a movie “Silent Knights” that is now in pre-production.
Kate Moennig:
– Kate Moennig was starring in “Three Rivers”, a TV drama about a team of transplant surgeons. On November 30, 2009, it was announced that CBS had pulled “Three Rivers” from the schedule, and though the show was going to complete production on all 13 episodes from the original order, no decisions have been made on whether they will air.
– Good news: Kate is scheduled to appear at L7 Convention in Birmingham, UK in June, along with Leisha, Clementine Ford, Janina Gavankar, Mei Melançon and Lauren Lee Smith (who will appear together with Jennifer Beals in “A Night For Dying Tigers”).
– Kate also starred in the movie ‘Everybody’s Fine’ with Robert De Niro and Drew Barrymore. The movie got some mixed reviews in the media. Kate only appeared in a few scenes, playing Drew’s love interest. Kate was also sort of reunited with another TLW alumna, Melissa Leo (Helena’s ex partner).
Rachel Shelley:
– After giving a birth to a baby girl on September 8, 2009, Rachel is flying pretty much under radar.
– Rachel continues writing for a UK-based lesbian Diva magazine as their celebrity columnist.
Janina Gavankar
– A few TV show appearances, including “Cleaner” and in the independent movie “6 Month Rule”.
– Janina Gavankar is also going to appear in supernatural crime drama series “The Gates”. Janina will play a local cop with a dark secret.

– Jane’s latest show “Glee” was nominated for several awards, including GLAAD Awards, so she might appear at GLAAD 21st Media Awards in Los Angeles in April. I’ll be doing Red Carpet at this event, as usual, and will post photos, interviews and my report on l-word.com. As of now, Elizabeth Keener and Clementine Ford are scheduled to appear from TLW, along with Wanda Sykes and Drew Barrymore.
