Well, it’s not US television, but there is finally a new lesbian television show about to hit the airwaves — in the UK. It’s called LIP SERVICE, and fans of The L Word should be ready to hit YouTube, torrents, or your UK buds to scrounge for glimpses of the new show.

A terrific review in The Guardian says:

it’s not driven by issues: there’s no co-parenting, no gender transitioning, no horrific tales of coming out gone sour, and no killer cancers to educate the viewers with. It operates on the basis that gay women being gay isn’t really a story at all, but that love and heartbreak, friendship and betrayal, crap jobs and worse bosses happen to everyone…

You can’t help but notice what we’re referring to as “Blonde Shane.”

Portions of the character description from BBC3 sound like they were ripped from the Shane profile:

Frankie attracts trouble at every turn. She comes across as fearless and irreverent but strip away the bravado and she’s the most vulnerable of the group. …For Frankie, casual sex offers an opportunity to run away from herself when rest of her life is in freefall. Frankie’s home life is difficult…

If you’re looking for more L Word analogies, we don’t have them at this point. The lead seems to be Cat, teenage friend of Frankie who was ditched by Frankie before their relationship had a chance. Now, Cat is dating a detective who sounds like she could send pulses racing… if you’re into the AlphaBette take charge, self assured, professionally successful kind of woman who is tall, dark, and has an angular jaw (…listening to THUDS from near and far :-) )

At this point, the Tess character seems like she might tip her hat to Alice, but the focus is going to be on Cat – Sam – Frankie.

We will be covering the show extensively both here on L-word.com and on the new LipServiceFansite.com. Yes, we think this show has so much potential that we’ve got a site up, running, and eagerly waiting for LIP SERVICE!
