When the L Word premiered I was finishing an involved film project and by August of 2005 Katrina happened to us here in New Orleans and the bad winds that raged for hours snapped cable TV lines for hundreds of miles. When it was restored so much remained in turmoil here for years that the L Word just never re-registered in my mind. That is my really, really true “how the dog ate my homework” story about how I came to be so damn late, and only 120 days ago finally watched this remarkable series on Netflix.
I will not repeat in detail what everone knows so well -that it was extraordinary and infuriating. The episodes mostly wonderfully written but sometimes it was gristle you might throw to the dogs the writing was so hard to swallow. Season three made me crazy and then season six made me nearly bi-polar. So, when it was all said and done and the credits rolled I searched for what in the world the fans had been doing for entertainment and frankly, comfort after what I had just watched. Then I found you!
It’s been wonderful. I’ve made friends here, and on Twitter I have followers who send me notes that I’m entertaining them. As the writers before me have posted, we are read by women all over the world! After being here such a short time writing fan fiction I’ve connected with people in Guam, Brasil, Malaysia, Italy and on and on. It’s remarkable and thoroughly enjoyable. It’s a virtual community anchored in something very real and visceral that happened because of what we saw and felt was communicated to us and still is being apparently. The latter part is probably historic. I wonder about that sometimes now that I’m a late-to-the-party but finally did arrive participant. What you have done to keep it all together with new infusions every day is incredible.
There were decisions to be made when I decided to try my hand at writing fan fiction and I didn’t make them all that wisely here at first! I dove into a scene with Bette, the Cursing Goddess, and flexed my POV writing muscle and gave it a go. I loved season five for the reasons we all do, but shortly I ran out of real estate to write so I threw it in reverse and began again with a long romp in seasons two and three. My lesfan.com book is a chronological mess until The Last Martini takes a long refreshing drink at the bar and Bette’s sensors realign while enjoying vodka.
My version of appreciation for the characters that were created, and as a bow to the actors who did their parts so beautifully, I remain true to the narrative plot of the series but go inside their minds with curiously compelling back stories and behind the scenes views of what our favorite characters were doing when they were not captivating us On Screen.
I wonder and try to tease out for example, where Bette’s immense flares of anger come from and the early roots of her controlling personality. She’s sarcastic and overly proud and then behind bravado and captivating sex appeal she secretly wonders all kinds of things in my stories. I wonder why Tina left her after the baby. I go through an emotional birth trauma journey with them as Bette rides in the ambulance with Tina after the water in the birthing pool turn red and Bette knew she had to save Tina’s life. Then the lovers move to a lovely few months of bliss and reconnection before, well you know, I can’t even say it…
Please leave my brief hello here to you and go read the writers who are doing sexy and amusing work because Jacky and all of you founding members have continued something so cool. My thanks for having us over and continuing the party. There will never be a last one out and the lights I believe will always stay on.
See you in a little while,
Blackbird

I was actually in New Orleans that weekend. We left around 11:30 pm Saturday night, thanks to people partying in the room next to us. We were going to leave at 5 am, but we couldn’t fall asleep, so we left. Driving north on 10 in the contraflow lanes is burned in my memory.
120 days ago?!?! Amazing story! We’re so glad you found us. This is a place of healing and support, even if the hurt was at the hands of a sometimes questionable creator ;-)
Hey, Blackbird! Better late than never. Or is that better late than pregnant? I can never remember. In any event, good to have you here! I’ve actually been told that the Netflix version of the show is a little different in terms of soundtrack.
So glad you found us! The site would’t be the same w/o you, your enthusiasm and your talent. This site is a veritable pot pourri of different writing styles that makes for a rich, tasty soup of stories.
hey blackbird.. season 5 was the best.. i was disappointed in season 6 cuz it just threw some stories off. i wish they focus on bette/tina wedding in season final cuz it would bring the best happy ending. i am so grateful to know about you. and thanks for all the wonderful stories you share with me and on twitter. i gotta catch up one of your story…”Gypsy Flies” which i will read shortly. keep up your stories and get more hot action as you are good at in your writing..hope we enjoy the friendship… keep up the good work…
I’m so glad you found the site! You know what they say about better late than never!
Your contributions enrich this community, which is ever changing, but always there for whoever is in need. I love the idea that someone can find this site almost a decade after the show aired and still write unique stories and create their own community with other members, both those who have been around for a long time and those who are newbies.
Thank you for joining us and for the big part you play in making this a safe, fun and entertaining place for all!
As I feel the wind blow up here in the treetops where blackbirds roost I sense that my perch on this front page will be given soon to another writer. I look forward to reading a different person’s tale. I have been grateful to receive your welcome and kind words and wishes. I sing them back to you with my thanks for them.
As the week has passed and comments have dropped in I realize I did walk into the rotor blades of ensuing remarks about being late. And I’ve thought about it and have decided that since this is a community of folks who love stories about sexy and beautiful, dramatic and flawed, dangerous and unstable women as I sail off back to our writer’s room here as LesFan where there is always a stocked refrigerator, there are no worries, the ice maker works, everything is exquisite catered, the masseuse is very hot and smells wonderful, all your bills are magically paid and the characters we write about visit us everyday so we are never without gorgeous and amusing company I should leave with a wonderful quote about being tardy.
“I am invariably late for appointments – sometimes as much as two hours. I’ve tried to change my ways but the things that make me late are too strong, and too pleasing.” Marilyn Monroe
Bye, Bye Blackbird
hello blackbird and welcome to the crazy world of lword writing. your piece was fascinating and a great reminder that people are coming to the show fresh every week/month which is why this site is so crucial to our community. thank you for bringing your fantastic energy to the site which reminds old so and so’s like me how exciting the characters are to all generations.
Thank you again
hey blackbird.. just got through reading “Low Hanging Fruit” story.. Alice is so funny. kudos to her . “Governator”word. cute idea in that story for Bette/Governor. one that stands out is Alice found Tina “Vaginal” medication and told Better that Henry gave Tina a nasty STD. Hilarious.. great story this is another on top of my list. keep up the good work always !!!! Thanks!!!
Absolutely love these stories! It’s so refreshing to have some of the blanks filled in from the show. I love that the stories aren’t just all boring sex scenes but actually connect mentally, emotionly AND physically to the characters we all love. “Sanctuary” was another example of that fantastic writing and I can’t wait for the next installment!
