~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My evolution on this site started the way most did…with an Internet search for more information on The L Word. Jacky’s site came up, I clicked on the link…and the trajectory of my life was catapulted into a totally different direction.
It’s not just reading stories about the characters of TLW, it’s about reading lesbian based stories. As someone who didn’t discover lesbian fiction until I was in my early 40’s, discovering this living, breathing archive of stories written by women from all over the world was mind blowing. I became obsessed with reading and commenting on all the different stories. And it didn’t matter what you did for a living, or where you lived. We had doctors, waitresses, English professors, stay at home moms, civil servants, retired women, and on and on writing fan fiction. All that mattered was the stories and the connections we were making through those stories.
Imagine a time when new chapters were being posted every 15 minutes. And if you were caught up with your reading in the morning, by the time you got home from work there was another 25 chapters to read! That was the L Word fan fiction life 10 years ago. If you went on vacation you better take your laptop with you, because there would be NO way to catch up with all the chapters that were posted while you were gone! It was a fantastically, wonderfully crazy time in the very best sense of the word.
In May of 2004 I was on a plane flying to Florida, thinking about one of the many Bette and Tina (I told you…obsessed) stories I was following, and all of a sudden this scene came into my head, dialogue and all. I was surprised because I had never written fiction, so to have this entire scene play out in my mind was an incredible experience. I scrambled to find something to write on, but didn’t have anything in my back pack. So, I grabbed a magazine from the seatback in front of me and pulled out one of the many loose advertisements…you know, the kind that fall out every time you pick up a magazine…and started writing. (I still have it and have attached a copy for you to see my first creative attempt.) Here we are ten years later, and while I don’t write very often, new storylines are always floating in and out of my consciousness. (And mulled over on Skype with Allyemmerson! LOL)
Along the way I started corresponding with other writers and readers who had contacted me via e-mail. ChakaSB was one of the first. She sent me an email about one of my stories, and from there a wonderful friendship developed…a friendship that ten years later is still going strong. That’s what makes this site so unique. It’s a place where not only can you be entertained with good stories, but the community you can step into and be a part of is like nothing you’ve experience…well, at least nothing I had experienced. I’ve made incredible friends along the way, some still in my life and some not, just because we all grow and move forward. It has made a huge planet much smaller for me. My first international “fan” was a woman in Italy, and just recently a woman who is just now reading my stories for the first time contacted me from South Africa. Wow!! It boggles my mind that ten years later women are still discovering this site! Whether these women were in my life for a short or long period of time, each one has touched me and enriched my life experience, both on and off this site.
And on top of the connections and friendships I’ve had fun…lots and lots of fun! Between the sometimes crazy and emotionally charged discussions in the forums, to the joy and nervousness of collaborating with fellow authors, to the challenges, to winning three fan fic awards, to the meet-ups we had in New York and San Francisco, to attending the first L Word convention in England, to attending the PowerUp annual fundraiser on behalf of the site, and the STORIES, and oh so many other things, it’s been a blast! But to be honest, some of the best times I’ve had on this site have taken place in my own head. LOL During season 3 I was so angry with every storyline IC was writing, especially Tina’s that I decided to write my own weird and twisted version! I admit to taking it out on the Tina character when I wrote Power of Suggestion and I shouldn’t Watch Season Three! If you can imagine a crazed woman sitting in front of her computer emitting a maniacal laugh and muttering ‘take THAT Ilene…andTHATandTHATandTHAT!’ as she typed furiously, that was me while writing those two stories…oh my did I have some wicked fun!! They were totally out there and way different than the sticky sweet romances I had written up until then. Ha ha ha!!! J
Lastly, I’m in awe of the blood, sweat, tears, and money Jacky has put into this site. She has been webmaster, banker, counselor, mother, friend, mentor, referee and so much more to thousands of women and men over the last ten years…and we all owe her a great deal of gratitude (and if we can afford it a donation here and there.) Thank you Jacky…and thank you to all the women and men who have been part of this site, and who have truly enriched my life! Keep reading, keep writing…and keep engaging with each other and just maybe the trajectory of your life will change too!
oh, I committed a terrible mistake: Vaginawig, there is absolutely on the list! :)
Many parts of your story I enjoyed reading so much and the picture of your first outline and writing from the airline paper was so great! Reminded me of a great work of fiction begun on a bar napkin or Chinese menu. As has been said before we are all so grateful to you, Allyemerson, Jacky and the others I wish I knew to name for beginning this site and continuing to work to keep it thriving. As one of the new writers I bow and follow in your footsteps. Blackbird
You said it yourself. It all began with me surfing the net for information about this new very much talked about show, that of course was never going to air in my country – (it eventually did, but only two seasons). I discovered Fanfic and the stories of AllyEmmerson, Skipton and you totally changed the way I saw myself. Being a lesbian stopped being something I was somehow ashamed of and had chosen to hide. Your many wonderful stories taught me to be proud of who I am, to dare celebrate and not shy away anymore. I have tried to follow regularly ever since and am immensely grateful to all the amazing writers and Jacky for providing this forum and showing everyone that love is love, no matter who you love. Mette
being almost as old as seahurst ( but not ) i remember those days she talks about well. i often refused to post if Seaurst had just posted cos i was too cowardly to follow her. anyhow – someone else would post and they would be even more intimating – like Jobadge, Gumby or Sandscribe so you just hit the post button and then you found someone else had posted in the meanwhile so you just put your head in a bucket out of frustration.
i so remember you Seahurst saving my sanity as a writer ( and we won’t even start with the personal sanity saving moments) like when the show ended and those stupid integration tapes showed up online. lets just say i lost my sense of humour and sanity over the Tina one – it was Michelle’s story ( what was it called ? ) that brought me back to Planet Normal. And you took care of Henry like No one else could
i wish you wrote more because i LOVE your take on scenes – like you ripping into Alice
during a recent challenge
Thanks for everything you have done for the site
hola
durante mucho tiempo fui lectora silenciosa ALIMENTANDO mi tristeza en mi introspeccon y me acurruque en mi nido, leyendo historias d amor que me alimentaban porque ten,ian identidad y Dios santo eran capaces de amar como cualquier persona Ally Emerson fuiste mi favorita y muchos que se mencionan m,as arriba.En la vor,agine fueron sanadores porque mi silencio decìa que no pod,ia hablar y no ten,ia con quien hablar que comprendiera mis vivencias…GRACIAS POR SUS CREACIONES Y ESPERO QUE CONTINUEN AQUELLAS QUE ESTAN PENDIENTES. Hoy puedo escribir y celebrar mi sanaci,on que no fue f,acil porque me sumergui en un mundo raro para mi pero muy frecuente en mi entorno familiar.gracias porque muchas de sus creaciones me hicieron llorar pero tambien sonreìr,entonces vamos adelante otra vez que puede..yo lista para seguir leyendo y dios conversando……
My dear friend Seahurst…. You’ve been such an interval part of this site. I can’t thank you enough for all the support you’ve given me, in both life and my writing. I cherish your stories and thanks for the inspiration.
Seahurst! Thank you for this post and those wonderful stories that kept me up way past my bedtime and rushing home from work to read! You are truly one of my closet friends and you know I adore and cherish you. May something new come along soon to inspire you to write that way again.
