Lost Girl: Heroes and Villains
It’s a fact that every story has a hero and every story has a villain. I mean, what kind of story would it be if we didn’t have something to root for, or against; someone to sympathize with, or dream of being? Regardless of the way the story is written, or performed, which one prefer depends on you and your perspective.
Every once in a while what we know about a character, or believe we know, is challenged by plot twists. Roles become reversed, leaving us, the fans, to decide to stay the course or switch loyalties. In my opinion, no science fiction show does this better than the Lost Girl writers. In fact, it’s one of the aspects I enjoy the most. There’s the main hero, Bo, and so many more than one villain, but they have given nearly every main character a spin through the seasons. They have taken every opportunity to place doubt in our minds as to whether the characters would ultimately be good, or bad. I find that I love examining the motivations of characters who have, for the most part, lived hundreds of years, as well as those younger ones that are finding their way.
We all have pasts and made decisions that shaped our futures. Some characters in Lost Girl have more of them than others (ahem…Trick) and we are left to wonder each time a new bit is revealed if this will change everything.
Let’s start with our heroine Bo. We love her strong sense of loyalty to her friends, doing the right thing and to her beliefs. Her love of humans keeps her grounded, but even she has shown glimpses of darkness. That is to be expected from a character born of both dark and light parent, but her power is beyond comprehension. She’s been brought back several times by her lovers, Lauren and Dyson, and Kenzi was her heart and her conscience. Ultimately, we are left to wonder if the dark could win out since she has pledged dark. Who knows what journey she will take as she tries to get her bestie back. I think we all believe that it won’t happen, though the road to her self-discovery has been an interesting, yet frustrating one for fans.
Now for our Dark Fae friends. Everyone’s favorite bad boy, Vex is loyal to a fault, but only to himself. While he does honor blood oath, apparently, he likes to straddle the line leaning toward whatever best suits his needs. Every time you want to keep him a bad guy though, he surprises with loyalty for the good guy, mainly to Kenzi. Seems even the Mesmer has a soft spot for the human.
Even the Valkyrie that’s hell bent on justice for her brother, Tamsin. She has every reason to hate Bo and want her to pay for what she did, not to mention her side job when she realizes that Bo is the target. Slowly, but surely though, we see the shift in her loyalties as the strength and loyalty of Bo once again wins over a strong soldier. Now that she has been reborn, there are debts to pay and her moral compass may be challenged some more, especially with Kenzi gone, who had been there for her at rebirth.
You’d think family would be safe, but Trick is possibly the biggest wild card of them all. Seems he has had a hand in most every bad thing that happens and despite his love for his granddaughter, he can’t seem to keep out of his own way. Season after season he has held things back and had his share of shady dealings. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he was the big bad at some point, either willingly or as a result of some misguided deeds.
Maybe your sometime shifter lover who you trust with your life would be safe? Dyson is interesting because he has been a hero, then a con, and back to a hero…maybe. His loyalty to Trick has proven to be just as secretive and questionable at times. With his newly pledged allegiance to Queen Bo, I’m hoping that is in the past.
Last, but certainly not least, we have Dr. Lauren Lewis. You love her, you hate her, either way you should fear her. Next to Trick, she is the most mysterious character and in many ways just as powerful. Each season we had to wonder what her true motives were as she went from slave, to runaway, to fugitive, to dark fae. Now she may be free, or maybe not, only time will tell. The interesting thing is that most of this has been of her own free will. She repeatedly pledged to the Ash, she ran to Taft, she hid to survive, then choose to align with the dark. She is good at working the angles. Does she have a grand plan that this all adds up to? Is she the next big bad with her de-faeing “serum”. One thing seems to ring true, that she would do anything for Bo, but it is entirely possible that even her love for Bo cannot top her love of science and who knows where that love affair may lead.
I’d love to hear your opinions on the topics, or any ones related to Lost Girl. Feel free to message me with suggestions and/or comments.
Before we put this to bed, Lost Girl’s season five began production this past week and is set to air this fall. No word yet on the return of Kenzi, but Buffy alum Charisma Carpenter is on slate to guest star. Here’s the official synopsis for the season by Showcase Canada:
“This season, Bo will go to hell and back to try and save the people she loves – her family. But she will discover that love is not always enough to keep her family together. When you go to hell, you’re bound to drag something evil back with you…”
Personally, I’m campaigning for Eliza Dushku, Buffy’s Faith, to make an appearance soon. Either way, I know it’s going to be a wild ride and can’t wait to see what’s in store!
