North of Somewhere (A Story) – (Chapter: The Return)

Ashley was slightly surprised at Spencer’s request. The Spencer she had come to know over the past few months didn’t seem to resemble the Spencer she had gotten to know since they had begun dating, and Ashley didn’t know how to handle the differences. Inconsistency worried Ashley for all of the obvious reasons. Her mother’s inconsistent moods, her father’s inconsistent lifestyle, and her own brand of predictable yet inconsistent behaviors that she seemed to have no control over…they all added up to one thing-if there was one thing Ashley Davies wanted, it was to have one person she could really count on. Spencer had proven to be that person thus far, but there was one thing that resounded in the back of her mind, coaxing her back into her typically negative state of mind. That night at Gray…Spencer had threatened Ashley with the possibility of walking out of her life if she didn’t give into their inevitable “more than friends” status. Ashley couldn’t figure out if that was Spencer’s way of testing her with an empty threat that she never had the intention of acting upon or something slightly more. She couldn’t help but wonder what was going on in Spencer’s head as she felt her fingers moving along the contours of her highly visible skin. Spencer’s face was aglow with the background light of the television and her face was locked into a look of complete and utter concentration. Ashley had to break away from her teenage paranoia to admire Spencer’s soft features in the dim light.

“You’re breathtaking, you know that?” Ashley said, fully unaware that the words were coming out of her mouth until she heard her own voice speak them.

“Breathtaking, huh?” Spencer said, a smile making its way across her face.

“Yeah, come here,” Ashley demanded in a whisper.

“Nope, sorry…I’m not done,” Spencer teased, but she made her way up Ashley’s body anyway until she was mouth to mouth with her.

“Your will is amazing, Spence,” Ashley said against the girl’s lips.

“Then it’s a good thing you’re only with me for my physical attributes,” Spencer replied, kissing Ashley in the process.

Their kiss lasted for several minutes, almost giving peace to Ashley’s worries. However, it could not calm Spencer’s nerves. She couldn’t ignore the intimidation felt by being with someone who had so much more experience than herself. Every time she touched Ashley she worried that there was a better way to do it that she was too inexperienced to know about. She was sure that Ashley would eventually start thinking about the other girls she had been with, the ones that knew exactly what to do. Spencer at least felt comfort in the fact that she wouldn’t have known what to do with a guy in this situation either.
