    Growing Up – (Chapter: Denial)

I sigh deeply and begin walking back to my room.

When I return to the room Danielle is laying on the bed I wanted.  “Hey!  That’s my bed.”

“Damn, I was hoping you wouldn’t notice.”  She has already done a lot of unpacking and she sees me notice.  “I go for speed unpacking; I hate it so much I just like to get it over with.”

“Good idea, but I’m the traditional type.  When I don’t like doing something I just drag it out mercilessly.”  I think about that statement for a moment before adding, “Then I could usually just get Spencer to do it.”  She laughs, but becomes slightly nervous.  “What?”

“Can I ask you a personal question?”  I reflect her nervousness, not sure what she is about to ask me.

                “I guess.”

“Are you and Spencer…..you know…”  She doesn’t want to finish the statement, but receiving a puzzled look from me, she gives in, “together?”

“Oh, no.  We’re just really good friends.”

“Wow, you could have fooled me.”

“What do you mean?”  I guess it has been a while since anyone had commented on our closeness.  Everyone in high school just accepted it and I did not consider what she might think.

“I don’t know.  Just the way you look at each other.  The way you act.  The way you talk to each other.  You know?  I just got the impression that you were a couple.”

“No.”  I look down.  I am not sure I am ready to share our history with her yet.

“You know it would be totally cool if you were.  I grew up in San Francisco and I have seen a lot of stuff.”  I laugh with her, because I know she is trying to lighten the mood and make me more comfortable.  I guess I should tell her.

“We had started off friends.  Best friends.  She moved to LA from Ohio in the middle of our sophomore year.”  I sit on the edge of my bed and she props her hands on her knees holding her head.  She looks like a first grader at story time and her behavior makes me chicken out.  “Never mind.”
