    Better Than Drugs (Chapter Four)

Spencer stayed up that whole night; trying to convince herself that she wasn’t waiting on Ashley’s call. She cringed when she realized that it was four AM and she was pretty sure that Ashley wasn’t going to call her. She felt the sting of disappointment but she did her best to brush it off; it was probably better this way. She climbed into her bed trying not focus on the thought that Ashley had been laying there with her just twenty four hours ago.

“Jesus Christ Carlin, snap out of it,” She muttered to herself, rolling over onto her back and throwing an arm over her eyes. She felt her cell phone buzzing beside her and she nearly broke her arm from flipping over so quickly to find it. “Hello?!” She half yelled when she got the cell phone open.

“Hi, is this Spencer?” The unfamiliar male voice asked. Spencer had to hold in a groan. It definitely wasn’t Ashley and she had made a fool out of herself.

                “Yeah,”

“This is Aiden Dennison. Ashley Davies wanted me to call you and tell you quote ‘the bastard won’t let me have my phone and I’m so so sorry,’” Aiden said in a bored tone. Spencer held in a giggle as she heard Ashley yelling in the background. “She’s also sorry that we called so late but…” She heard more yelling, “I’m apparently an ass wipe and wouldn’t listen to her until a few minutes ago.” Spencer laughed freely this time and she could hear his low chuckle over the phone. “Listen, I wanted to thank you for taking care of Ashley last night. She’s been doing so well but it just –“

“Yeah, no, it’s not a problem. I, uh – is she going to be okay?” Spencer asked, hating the vulnerable tone in her voice.

“I don’t know but you seem to help her. She can’t stop talking about you,” Spencer felt a blush cover her cheeks. “Listen, I have to be real with you for a second. Ashley really likes you and she hardly ever puts herself in a position to get hurt so you must be something special to her. If you hurt her in any way I will personally hunt you down.” She felt a shiver run down her spine at his words, because she could tell that they were true. “If you’re not serious about this then you might as well pull out now because when Ashley holds on it’s a death grip and you need to be able to handle that.”
