    Can't handle the truth

It was just a simple question. Why did it bother her so much? She stared at Michael blankly. Willing herself to reply, but as her brain fired to tick through possible responses, she suddenly realized that there were none from which to choose. Her mind at the moment was the veritable tabula rasa — a blank slate. 'I have to have a reason, an excuse… an answer,' she thought. 'God, he's just sitting there staring at me, waiting for me to speak.' She chided herself inwardly 'say something Simone, he's waiting for an answer.'

But she just didn't have one to give. It was that simple, she had no answer to his query. She saw his mouth moving and forming the words, she heard them as they fell on her ears…  "why does the subject of us moving in together stress you out so much."  But she froze and her cognitive processing skills seem limited to only her inner monologue.  'Uh,… where do I start… I don't know why… actually, I think I do… but it can't be…

Forcing herself to communicate some type of response, she stalled by smiling demurely then pleaded with her eyes, as much as with her words, "can't we just have a nice evening out together?" 'Gosh she's beautiful' Michael thought as he watched her speak. 'She always is, but especially tonight … is it the lighting in here? … she looks stunning.' Her face softening the blow, but still, he was shot down again. Michael would be starting off their evening meal with a steaming hot cup of disappointment. Whether it was because Michael sensed that pushing would hasten rejection causing Simone to say no to his request to live together then and there or because he was just softened by her beauty and the way her angel eyes implored him, he let the topic drop. "All right, you're right, your right."

Returning to his menu resolving to have a 'nice evening,' Michael considered what to order. Although Simone seemed to be doing the same, she was revisiting her thoughts and his question.  'What does he want from me,? clearly more than a dating relationship.'  She knew this moment was inevitable, he'd brought the topic up several times before, but yet she somehow thought she could avoid it inevitably too. She thought most men would be thrilled to have the non-committal, loosely defined relationship that they had. Simone was far from the clingy, needy type of girlfriend. In fact, from a man's perspective, she would have thought she'd be considered the ideal girlfriend, one that gave everything and demanded nothing.
