If it is meant to be…Chapter 12
“It’s 22 years later…and I’m falling for you all over again.”
Tina was standing in the kitchen, leaning up against the counter, but when Bette made her declaration, her knees went weak, and she slowly slid down the kitchen cabinet to the floor, her knees pulled up to her chest, her eyes filling with tears.
“Oh my God, Bette. How can this be? How, after 15 years can you just walk back into my life and change everything?”
“I don’t know. But you’re right T, in an instant, everything did change. My question is, how do we figure out exactly what those changes will bring from different ends of the country?”
Tina took a deep breath, then slowly let it out. Trying to lighten the mood, she chuckled. “God Bette, you and your questions! Can’t I just enjoy for a moment what you just said to me, without having to worry about logistics?” But when Bette didn’t respond, Tina said, “Ok, Ok…maybe not.” She took a deep breath. “Baby, I don’t know. My life…my children, their father, are here in Seattle.”
“I know Baby. My life…Milaine, Kit and Leslie…my business, are here in New York.”
There was silence, as both women contemplated the daunting idea of a what a bi-coastal relationship would entail.
Bette really didn’t have any answers, so she voiced the concern she felt at dinner the night before. “Look T, maybe we are getting way ahead of ourselves. I mean, we have shared only one dinner and a car ride together. I’m not sure about you, but I know how much I have changed over the years, and…well, maybe you might not like all those changes. I mean…I’m not the dominant, controlling, conquer the world, woman you fell in love with.” Bette’s voice got very quiet. “I am still aggressive when it comes to work, but I am not even close to being the woman who went to Peggy Peabody for the Provocation’s exhibit. That woman was looking for…craving…a train wreck. I know I made choices subconsciously, just so that collision would happen…because I know on some level I wanted to see if I could save all the passengers. I wanted to be the hero…to save the day, so to speak. I am not that person any more.” Bette laughed softly. “I am older and calmer now. I don’t feel the need to be anybody’s hero. Of course, it is easy to be calm once you have achieved a certain amount of professional success.”
“And personal success. Bette, don’t sell yourself short on that. Your personal life has been a great success. There are a whole lot of people out there who have benefited from all the pain you and I went through, and that is a good thing. I saw how you are with Milaine…I melted when you called her Love. I saw what a loving and caring friend you are to Leslie. I listened to you talk with such love and affection about Nica, and Baby…I saw how you were with my children.” Tina smiled into the phone and let out a soft sigh. “Bette, when I first saw you in your gallery the other day, I knew in my heart that I still loved the Bette Porter of my past…but after watching you, and listening to you these last two days…this is the Bette Porter I have fallen in love with all over again. You said it…it was instant…overwhelming…uncontrollable.”
Tina sat there for a moment, waiting for Bette to respond, but she didn’t. Then Tina heard it…soft sniffles…a ragged breath. Bette was silently crying on the other end of the phone. Tina could feel all the love Bette felt for her…7 years of day to day, night to night, love…15 years of hidden, buried love…enveloping them both together…no matter the miles between them.
Bette’s tears finally slowed down. She shook her head and whispered to Tina. “How can you be in love with me Tina? How can you say you still love the Bette of the past? How can you, after everything I did to you, to us the last year of our relationship? I sabotaged us…”
“Stop Bette. I told you last night that I forgave you a long time ago for your actions. And that’s what they were Bette, actions. Your cheating was something you did…it was not who you were. You need to remember the first several years of our relationship. That Bette Porter was very similar to the Bette Porter of today. That Bette Porter was the love of my life. That Bette Porter is talking to me right now.” Tina softened her voice. “Don’t ya get it Bette Porter…you are who you are…and whether it’s 2004, or 2019…I’m still in love with you.”
Bette let out a deep breath, feeling a little light headed. “Oh God T. I don’t what I did to deserve you, and I don’t care what I have to do, but I’m not letting go this time…ever. I love you Tina Kennard.”
Tina grinned into the phone and lowered her head onto her knees, which were still pulled up to her chest. “I love you too, Baby.”
“Mom?”

No…., don’t stop now. The conversation was just getting good. Please pose another chapter soon! I love this story, but I’ve already said as much.
GREAT job seahurst!. i’m really digging this story.
wow Bette sure was on the Diva Train! I am with all the others and saying that I am waiting to read every word . I do have to say that what was said was out of maturing and knowing that what you lost once that you have with in your power to get it back and cherish it like it is your last day. Bette knows this and now she won’t be letting go this time…ever. Fantastic! I will be waiting for the next chapter.
Dang those kids! They always find a way to interrupt at the most inopportune time, don’t they?
Seahurst, I am LOVING the way that you are weaving this tale! It’s really good stuff ~ keep up the GREAT work.
Let them become what they are meant to be B and T.
Thanks for putting a smile on my face tonight. I love this story and where it is going Please continue and soon!!!!
Please take your time with this..hehe, I think the oldest daughter can handle it. Ok, I’m officially lost in this story. This killed me by the way: “just so that collision would happen…because I know on some level I wanted to see if I could save all the passengers.” WOW! Great job Seahurst!!
I just want to say yes to all. It was so raw with the words that were needed to be said. I can’t wait for the next chapter. Thanks
You don’t know how I wait for your stories. I agree with you AvidREader… they have more open communication but I also think that it was a result of maturing as well over the years. Seahurst, I can’t wait for your next chapter… can you make it just a tad bit longer…? pleassseee? Thanks for your time to write this.
You are such a tease! (wink)
Correction: post, not pose. sorry.
Wow, this is such great work! It’s like a movie… I can see the oldest daughter having the hardest time with this, she might feel betrayed that her mother hid this part of her life.. but the little ones might adjust quicker– God, listen to me, it’s like they’re real people! hahaa -Let’s get Bette on a plane pronto!
great!
first… all know tina and bette love each other… no doubts about how this story has to continue…
second, as long as the kids are tina’s they are going to be so clever and tender and loving as mommys.. and as long as mommy loves bette, they are going to love bette so much as tina does… and you did it well because bette made the kids fall in love with her on at the first sight as the mom did 22 years ago… and milaine.. she will understand…
I love the way you keep the readers out of breath.
