Betrayal in the First Degree Chapter 8
Summary of the previous chapter: Bette returns, Tonya eyes the good stuff, Tina tries to tell the gang what happened. She finally tries to get Bette to talk about what happened. Bette says that it is buried.
The gang, less Tonya who still has her face buried in the Godiva box, watch apprehensively as Bette and Tina return to the room. As she carries a tray of glasses and an ice bucket, Bettes face betrays nothing. Tina, on the other hand, looks as if she is about to snap. The decision of what to do is made. Tina looks like she needs a drink so, the gang will stay.
Bette places the tray on the coffee table alongside her earlier purchases and kneels in front of the table.
We need music. She instructs.
Alice, being closest to the stereo at that moment turns on the radio which has somehow landed on a jazz station. That seems like a safe bet at the moment.
Bette proceeds to pour drinks for everyone. Rum and Cokes are made for Tina, Alice, Shane and Dana. Bette pours herself scotch, seeing Tonya eyeing the Johnny Walker, she pours a drink for Tonya as well.
Heres to good times with good friends. Bette declares as she lifts her glass into the air. Everyone proceeds to empty their glass as they all need a drink. Tonya, not used to the good stuff straight up, starts to choke. No one makes an attempt to come to her rescue and she eventually recovers.
Bette feels the scotch hit her stomach. The burning pain felt good as the alcohol went down. She knows that she just has to keep concentrating on her friends, her body, anything but the feelings continuing to stab at her heart. She knows that if she lets her control slip, even a little, her wall will come crashing.
Tina downs her drink hoping that it will calm her a little bit. She had figured. what Bette was doing even before their confrontation in the kitchen. It was, actually, the reaction she had feared most. In the part of herself that has begun to analyze what she had done, she realized that it was, at least partially, what had led her to this place.
Shane, Alice, and Dana also hope that the drink will relax them and help them deal with the situation. They had heard Tina yell at Bette in the kitchen, but had not heard Bettes response. They wonder if Bette is waiting for just the right moment to vilify Tina in front to them, to subject her to public humiliation as she had earlier submitted Bette.
Seeing that no one is saying anything having emptied their glasses, Shane speaks. Well, uh, maybe we should get going now.
Why? Bette asks. There is plenty more booze her. You dont expect Tina and I to drink all of this do you?
Bette begins to pour refills for her wife and her guests as she instructs Alice to find better music. Alice pushes the seek button and stops as a song begins:
Take me back in the arms I love
Need me like you did before
Touch me once again
And remember when
There was no one that you wanted more
They look at Bette to see if she will react to the words sung by the beautiful and talented, though rather cheesy in her personal life, French Canadian.
Bette shows no reaction, though it is hard to tell as she is staring into her glass of Scotch as if it holds the answers. A tear runs down Tinas cheek.
Don’t go you know you will break my heart
She won’t love you like I will
I’m the one who’ll stay
When she walks away
And you know I’ll be standing here still
Alice and Dana look at each other realizing how much this verse applies to them as well. Dana stands up and walks over to kneel in front of Alice who is sitting on the couch. Throughout, neither of them take their eyes off of each other.
As Alice and Dana are doing this, they do not notice Bette look up and at Tina. Shane sees the tears form in Bettes eyes before she looks at the ceiling to blink them away.
I’ll be waiting for you
Here inside my heart
I’m the one who wants to love you more
You will see I can give you
Everything you need
Let me be the one to love you more
The song continues to play and no one speaks. Each person is lost in their thoughts. Shane thinks of how she could give Cherie everything she needs emotionally, but never financially.
Alice and Dana think of what they can give each other and what Tonya can never give Dana.
Bette thinks of her wife in bed with Helena and Tina begins to fully realize the depth of what she has done to Bette.
