Betrayal in the First Degree – Chapter 10 – corrected (I originally posted Chapter 11 as Chapter 10)

Summary of the previous chapter: Another guest visits the house, it is just too much for everyone to take.

Alice returns from the bathroom as the laughter ends. It is then that the absence of Bette is noticed.
Where the ***** did Porter go? Alice asks.
    Everyone shakes their head.
Maybe her bird knows. Tonya suggests from the box of chocolates.
Jenny speaks. I asked her. She said that she couldnt fly to watch where Bette went. She senses a presence in the room and wishes to stay perched with me.
For the second time that night, Alice goes in search of Bette. This time she thinks to check for the Saab. It is gone.
Oh *****. Alice says as she turns to walk back into the house.
Bette left. She announces to the stunned room.
Do you think she went to get more candy? asks Tonya as realizes that there is less than half of a box of chocolates left for her.
They all turn and stare at Tonya. Even Jenny realizes how inappropriate Tonya is being. Is she crazy? Jenny and the Raven ask Dana.
Dana cant take it anymore. She reaches into her pocket. Tonya, go home.
    But, toodle loodle.
I mean it Tonya. Take the ***** keys, get in my ***** car, and go the ***** home.
Tonya sulks but chooses to obey. She leaves taking the box of chocolate with her.
The Raven must go home. She needs sleep. Jenny announces as she gets up and prepares to leave.
Thank God that whack job is gone Alice mutters under her breath.
Finally, Tina, Shane, Alice and Dana are alone in the house. Shane goes over and pours another drink for everyone. She distributes the glasses and sits next to Tina.
    Okay, Tina. What happened?
Bette came home and found me with Helena.
You mean Helena who hates Bette because Bette used her mother to ***** Helenas best friend out of Provocations.
Yes. Tina answers meekly before staring at the floor.
What did Bette do? Dana asks.
She told Helena to get out and then she went outside. Tina responds, her voice so soft it is barely audible.
    Did you talk about it?
No, Bette just kept acting like nothing was happening. We even went to the CAC to pack up her office like it was no big deal.
She quit her job? Shane asks in total shock.
Yeah. Tina answers as tears begin to fall.
What did she say in the kitchen? Alice inquires.
She said that she wants to pack it in a box and bury in under the earth.
    The CAC? Dana asks incredulously.
No Alice looks at Dana wondering if why Dana would choose now to have a Tonya moment.
Tina speaks softly. She wants to pretend like it never happened.
That sounds like Porter. Alice says as the other two stooges nod their heads in agreement.
Weve got to find her. Tina says. Im afraid she will go do something stupid.
How much did she have to drink? Dana asks.
Too much to be driving. Shane says.
    ***** adds Alice.
Shane has a Yoda moment. Lets call her cell. Maybe she will answer.
In a moment reminiscent of an old western, they all whip out their cells like guns from holsters.
Alice wins and begins to dial. She is watched anxiously.
Voice mail she announces. Porter, where the ***** are you? You left your own goddamn party. Damnit, answer Porter.
Nothing. She finally closes her phone.
Where would she go? Dana asks.
    Try Kit. Alice suggests.
They look at each other trying to decide who is going to be the one to call Kit. Tina doesnt know about the earlier call, but the stooges know that Kit will be suspicious if she gets another where is Bette? inquiry.
She didnt go to Kit. Tina speaks softly.
    How do you know?
She wouldnt want Kit to know anything is wrong.
Damn Porter Alice says echoing the sentiments of the group. Why wont Bette ever let anyone be there for her?
Just beneath the surface is a lurking fear. It is finally Tina who gives it voice. Should we call Helena to warn her that Bette may be looking for her?
Given Tinas condition, it falls to Shane to take control in the absence of Bette.
Lets wait on that. Well go out looking for her. Tina you stay here in case she comes home or calls.
It dawns on Alice that she rode with Dana who has sent her Subaru home with the offending Tonya. Tina gets up to retrieve the keys to her car.
Im scared. Dana whispers when Tina is out of earshot.
Me too, Dane. Alice says as she puts her arm around Dana.
Shane heads her truck in the direction of the beach. Alice and Dana head in the direction of the CAC. Unbeknownst to them all, Bette is closer than anyone of them realize.
