    Jess — Plan B; pt. 48

We’re in the kitchen. Porter is staring at the cabinets as if something fully prepared and edible is going to magically appear from within.

That might happen, if mom was here. But she’s not. So, it appears that it’s up to the two of us to forage or starve.

I hate starving. Not that I’ve ever really, truly been in a situation where I was starving, but I think you get the drift of what I’m saying.

    “Any ideas?” She asks.

    “Pizza?”

She looks at me and again, just as I think she’s ready to give in, she shakes her head no.

    It’s not like I didn’t try.

    “What about”

Whatever she was contemplating must have gotten ruled out since she never completed the thought. Maybe I should suggest ordering in again; they say the third time’s a charm.

But there’s something about Porter’s suffering in the kitchen that I’m enjoying.

It appears that there’s no real danger to me, I hope, by being a part of this whole grand experiment that she wants to refer to as dinner.

“What would you do in New York?”

She gives me this kind of embarrassed smile. Glad to know it’s not just mom that can react like that; other grown-ups do it, too. “Order in.”

“Ha!” And I laugh. I could tell by her place that she is just not a woman who cooks. I mean, I was there, I saw her refrigerator.

Mom was able to assemble some edibles in Bette-land, but I also think that if mom was stuck on a deserted island, she’d be the one figuring out how to fix the hole in the boat with coconuts. Not that she wouldn’t make me work, also; I’d be her number 1 flunky. But still, mom’s pretty handy at this domestic stuff, even with severe limitations.

I have this feeling that Porter is just not domestic.

Not that I necessarily want to give aid and comfort to the enemy, but I still don’t want to starve. And the more I stand here in the kitchen wondering about the what and when of my next meal, the hungrier I’m starting to feel.

    1. What can I say other than I am always so happy to see a new post from you! “but once supplied with a knife and cutting board, I got myself wondering why I’d just given the woman a knife.” has me rolling on the floor laughing so loud I scared the cat.

Jess has a softer side? So did Linda Blair in The Exhorsit…when she wasn’t possessed! Maybe Jess just might end up liking Bette in spite of her teenage years.

I like the way Bette is walking on pins and needles one minute, but unwilling to cave the next. Another great chapter. Thank you for taking time out from your busy life to post, it is truly appreciated.

    2. Is there a light at the end of this tunnel? Is it possible that Jess will discover that Bette isn’t quite the monster she has imagined? I’m loving this!

    3. just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading your story…i love seeing Bette try so hard and its quite funny that of all people to make Bette squirm, it’s a 15 yr old :-)

    4. great chapter. love how you incorporated the kitchen. always felt you can talk just about anything in a kitchen while cooking or cleaning. maybe bette should go and watch jess’ softball game to show support. always made me happy when someone would come watch me. thanks for posting so soon and keep it up please. love your story.

    5. yeah Jess Bette is a vampire and she is more than welcome to bite my neck..lol..i´m so glad Jess is finally acting like a human being..i hope they act like mom and daughter before Tina goes back but i think that is too much to ask..lol..great chapter P thanks

    6. Glad to see you P, it’s going to be a sucky weekend I’m sick, really sick,(streph throat) so as I’m lying in bed sweating with this fever and drooling, I had to let you know that bit about the vampire had me LMAO, it hurt like hell but I just couldn’t stop.

    7. Despite your so busy life of bon-bons, reality tv and little creatures, you are just so funny! I love the sense of humor you have for your characters.

Thank you! Many bon bons for you!

    8. Finally Jess is starting to soften a little. I’m still very curious though as to why BP left in the first place, I have a feeling it was Tina who pushed her away which may make Jess think differently towards her, especially if she’s starting to like her a little
