    Breaking silence

Bette felt her pulse quicken at her throat as her body responded to the information her mind could not quite comprehend.  Tina’s mother was on the phone.  She had called.  And Bette was talking to her.

“Hold one moment and I’ll get Tina,” Bette said evenly, deciding not to voice her initial response, which was something along the lines of, “Where the ***** have you been for the last 10 years?”

Bette paused long enough to collect herself before walking into the kitchen where Tina was putting the final touches on the meal she was about to serve.

“T,” Bette said, standing next to her wife.

“Babe, could you get me some fresh cilantro from out back?  I want to add a quick garnish,” Tina replied, not looking up.

    “Tina.”

There was something in Bette’s tone that made Shane slip quietly out of the kitchen, and forced Tina stop what she was doing and direct her full attention to her wife.

“Your mom is on the phone,” Bette said gently, resting her hands on Tina’s shoulders.

    “What?”

“Why don’t you go back to our room and take the call?”

Tina chewed her lower lip in silence, not moving.

“Hey.  It’s okay.  Go ahead and talk to her,” Bette said, tucking a stray lock of Tina’s hair back behind her ear.

Finally, Tina let out the deep breath she’d been holding.  “Yeah.  I’llgo talk to her.”

“I’ll be right here.”  And then Bette drew Tina to her, holding her so close she could feel the tremble move through her lover’s body.

“Remember.  You have a new family now,” Bette whispered, not letting go.

Tina nodded against Bette’s shoulder, stepping away just far enough to look up into Bette’s eyes.  “I love you,” she said.

“I love you, too.  More than anything or anyone.”

And then Tina went to the bedroom to take her call.

Alice and Shane were sitting side by side on the couch when Bette came into living room to hang up the extension.  Once the receiver was securely in its cradle, she faced her friends.

“Well.  That wasn’t Dana, was it?”  Alice said quietly.

    4. Glad to see that Tina’s family are willing to make an effort. Hopefully 10 lost years and a grandchild is enough for them to put things in perspective. Thanks.

I’ll have to wait, but if I don’t comment, that means that I might have expired from impatience, or something.

    8. FFC,
Brilliant. You have madfe my day with the latest updates to this very interesting story.
I loved the line “‘You’ll have time. This is only the beginning.'” because it sums up all the joy and anticipation to come.
Also, it means that more chapters are on there way. Hurrah!
Will be watching for the your installment.
The dialogue in this part is so natural and realistic. The shock and horror of this phone call and all the implications it brings are so wonderfully conveyed by your flair for the narrative.
      Can’t wait.
      Your Loyal Fan.
