    Breaking silence

    “Not exactly,” Bette replied.

“How’s Tina?”  Shane asked, leaning forward.

    “In shock, I think.”

“I guess there’s really no way to prepare for something like this.  People coming back from the dead,” Shane mused.

“What did she sound like?  Your mother in law?” Alice wanted to know.

“Nervous.  Normal,” Bette shook her head.  “I didn’t pay very close attention.”

“You’ll have time.  This is only the beginning.”

“How about if we head out and leave you guys alone?  We can do this some other time,” Shane said, making a move to rise.

“Actually, I’m sure that Tina would really appreciate the extra support,” Bette replied.

“*****,” Alice murmured to herself.  “This is unfucking real.”

“Seriously, Bette.  Are you positive we won’t be in the way?” Shane countered, still half way to her feet.

“We’re a family, right?  And families need to be together at times like this,” Alice said decisively.

“Right,” Bette said, looking down the hallway toward their closed bedroom door.  “We should be together.”

“If I’m staying, I’m getting more wine,” Alice said, standing.  “And we should probably do something about dinner.  Wrap it or keep it warm orwhatever.”

“I’ll do it,” Shane said, pushing up off of the couch.

They busied themselves without speaking, Bette opened a second bottle of wine, Alice and Shane fussed over the meal Tina had prepared, trying to decide the best way to preserve it.  When Dana showed up at the door 20 minutes later, Bette decided to put together some impromptu hors d’oeuvres.  She was slicing apples for the brie when Tina came up behind her.

“That’s good,” Tina said, biting through a slice of fruit.

“How are you?”  Bette asked, leaving her task, gathering Tina in her arms.

“Fine.  I mean  Yes.  I’m fine.”

“I asked everyone to stay.  I thought you might appreciate having some company.”

    “Thanks.”

Tina seemed strangely, unnaturally calm, and Bette leaned back to look into the familiar clear brown eyes in front of her, trying to plumb the shining depths for some hint of what had gone on during the past half hour.

“Do you want to talk?  Can you tell me what happened?”

“We caught up a little bit.  Lots of it we already know, from Rick.  She umshe’s still doing real estate sales part time.  My dad is retired.  Their health is good.  They’re talking about getting rid of the house and moving to Arizona, but─”

“Tina,” Bette interrupted.  “What did she say about us?  About Jordan?”

“She said she’sbeautiful,” Tina said, barely audibly.  “And umthey”

    “They what?” Bette prompted.

“They want to meetboth of you.”

I’ll have to wait, but if I don’t comment, that means that I might have expired from impatience, or something.

    8. FFC,
Brilliant. You have madfe my day with the latest updates to this very interesting story.
I loved the line “‘You’ll have time. This is only the beginning.'” because it sums up all the joy and anticipation to come.
Also, it means that more chapters are on there way. Hurrah!
Will be watching for the your installment.
The dialogue in this part is so natural and realistic. The shock and horror of this phone call and all the implications it brings are so wonderfully conveyed by your flair for the narrative.
      Can’t wait.
      Your Loyal Fan.
