After a few minutes a nurse came back bringing the little baby, and asking Shane if she wanted to hold him and take him to Carmen, she wasn’t so sure, but the nurse reassured her, so she took him. As soon as she had the baby in her arms she felt a very warm feeling taking over her, a sudden happiness she had never felt before, the baby seemed to be staring straight at her, then she offered her finger and he took it and squeezed as strong as his delicate hand could, and right that very second, Shane knew… She just knew that this is how being a parent feels like, and she sure liked it. She opened the door of Carmen’s room as silently as possible, once inside; she sat on the chair right next to Carmen and rocked the baby caressing his hair or lack there of, she was just looking at him, trying to understand how  could she love so much to someone so little, someone she had met only a few moments a go, then she felt like she had to say something.

            -Hey there little guy… I’m umm, I’m your mom, My name’s Shane, I just want you to know that from now on I’ll make sure you’re ok, I’ll take care of you and your mom Carmen, I love you both, you came into my life right when I needed you, and now we’re a family and that’s all I ever wanted, so… Thank you.- Shane finished kissing her baby’s forehead, and just then Carmen opened her eyes, she had been listening what she was saying but she chose not to interrupt. – Hey, you’re awake, did I wake you? –

            – No honey, it’s ok. – She smiled tenderly to Shane, and a single tear dropped from her eyes. Shane’s were already teary so she just let it all out then, it was a mix of happiness and relived and fears… lots of those. But she felt ready to face them all. Shane took the baby to Carmen and then laid on bed right next to the baby who was in the middle between her and Carmen and she fell quickly asleep. Shane woke up to the sound of someone being on the kitchen, she opened her eyes and looked for Carmen or the baby but she saw neither, so she walked toward the kitchen really slowly and saw Carmen holding the baby with one arm and cooking something with the other, Shane stood very still and quiet and watched Carmen being a mom, and she felt so good, so proud of herself for achieving this, she was still here, Carmen was still with her after all, so maybe she wasn’t so bad.
