A Friendship in Progress Part 4

Bette was in a foul mood. Had been for weeks – 4 weeks to be exact, since the last time she saw Helena. She’d tried to see her, to speak to her after the bombshell of her New York plans, but Helena had been impossible to reach. In fact, she seemed to have cut herself off from everyone but Alice. She’d phoned, called round, bought the wine as usual for their Thursday night get together, but Helena always had an excuse. She was either just on her way out when Bette called round, busy with a new night-class on a Thursday, or had problems with her phone. It didn’t take a genius to realise that Helena had totally withdrawn from her and the more she tried to reach out to her, the more Helena pulled away.

She glanced at her phone. No new messages, no missed calls. She began to write a message

    To: Helena

    Its Thursday. I miss you. B x

Sent. It would be ignored, she knew it would, but she wasn’t going to stop trying. Her phone beeped to signify a new message

    From: Helena

The old me or the new me?

Bette read it several times, confused by the response but happy that she’d finally got one.

    To: Helena

    Just you x

It was Friday evening and Bette had returned late from work. Again. This had become a regular habit, ever since Helena had set a date for the move. Well, not actually a moving date, she’d told Alice and the others that she was taking a two-week vacation to New York, to see the children and meet up with Peggy. But Bette knew that in reality it was a chance for her to seek employment and a home and finalise her plans.

So as the date for the "vacation" moved closer, so Bette’s days at work grew longer. She went in early, returned late, volunteered to go into the University at weekends if required. She’d read things wrong she told herself, Helena didn’t care as much for their friendship as she’d first thought. But the more she demanded herself to forget her, the more Helena was on her mind. What the hell had she done wrong? Why was she pushing her away like this?

    1. Silsden, your original idea is working out beautifully, so by all means stick with it. That said, I really hope Bette runs after Helena. There’s still much to be done on the communication front.

    2. **Stomping Foot!** No! No! No! No! No! Silly!!!! We can’t have this!! What’s wrong with Bette? Cat got her tongue? Heheh…great job! Want more asap! I’ve been waiting sooo long! [I’m sorry you’ve been ill. Hope you’re feeling better :) ]

    3. Well you might be Silly, silly, or at least you are now,to us’uns, but this fic is not!! Helena has made a start…good Helena, now keep talking, Bette keep listening, stay strong girls and get it together!! Sorry you have been sick. hope you’re feeling better. Hey zhee..haven’t seen ya in a LONG TIME.. we really really need a sip or two of the best wine, oui?

    4. whew, noticed I forgot to comment on the last chap. was a bit wrapped up in some stuff I guess ;P will do it here and now: I like the idea that Helena loves everything about Bette’s, even her flaws… and it’s good she doesn’t want to/feels as if she needs to change a thing about her. but as a matter of fact, I think they *change* each other by opening their hearts to one another, showing their *real* selves and realising it’s okay, knowing each other so well and showing that the past’s past… okay, maybe that’s not really *change* but…well…you know what I mean, don’t you?! *lol* okay, lost my words…nevermind…on to this chap: love it that both Bette and Helena know each other so well but don’t see the obvious.. or at least don’t act on what they assume and with *people* who ‘will be disappointed to discover that she isn’t so new after all’ Helena means Bette, right?! (shouting ***Heeellllooooo Beeetteee, do you need it written down?!?! or a flashing neon sign?? pffff now grab your running shoes, get your tongue back and get that woman!!!*** lol) ^^ I’d really like to see how Helena tries to manipulate Peggy! should be fun =) rofl okay, hope you won’t keep us waiting too long for the next post. pps and ps: hope you’re well again! + hope you don’t mind a lil shoutout to zheese: yep, need a sip or two of wine, too… *winks*
