    A Friendship in Progress – Part 3

Helena was confused. She felt her entire life had been one complicated mess and the more she tried to work things out, the hazier her thoughts became. The last year had been one of the happiest of her life, but she always felt something was missing. Not just her money, but it was like her life was broken into two parts – and never the twain shall meet. She was upset that her former friends and acquaintances, some of which she had cared for deeply, no longer kept in contact and had no idea how she was currently reassessing her life. It hurt her that her current friends didn’t know about her past life, didn’t seem to want to see beyond the bitch that they presumed she used to be. She wasn’t a different person; she hadn’t had a body or brain transplant. Her desires, fears and hopes remained the same as they always were. Her values, beliefs and aspirations hadn’t changed. So why couldn’t people see that there wasn’t a good or bad Helena, an old and new person, just the one Helena Peabody – struggling through life as she always had, wanting the best for her children, friends and herself.

When she was at boarding school in London she was popular with the other girls. Nobody really judged her wealth or status – there were others just as rich as her at the school. It was when she went to University that things started to change. She began as she’d left off at school – a popular student, with an eclectic mix of friends and a generous heart.  But then rumours circulated of the Peabody name and exactly what it meant.  She wasn’t just a little rich, she was filthy rich – didn’t really need to get her degree to make it in her life ahead, nor did she need to work, she was set up for life.  People started asking her for favours – small at first, lending them a few pounds here and there, borrowing her clothes, using her car. Helena didn’t mind, she was pleased she could help out her friends and if she was really honest with herself, it made her feel good.  Wanted.  Important. Then the requests became bigger – would she pay their rent this month if they were a little short, how about a vacation to see Peggy (or rather a free trip to New York).  Things started to feel uncomfortable – if she said no, they would call her tight, create a scene or just disappear from her life. If she said yes – the requests got more extravagant.

    1. Well, that makes perfect sense: Helena loves Bette but thinks Bette loves only an idealized version of Helena. So now the question is does Bette love the new Helena or the real Helena? These two pages have revealed more about Helena’s psychology than four seasons of TLW, Silsden, so rest assured story length is not an issue. Thanks for this and post when you can.

    2. If Helena and Bette are really friends, then Helena needs to start talking, now. She is reacting to what she THINKS Bette thinks, which is always a mistake, and she will lose Bette, absolutely, and it will be her own doing. They need to talk, please, let them talk, please?

    3. far be it from me to assume what the writer/characters are thinking, however, i think bette enjoys the helena she has come to know…she knew the confident mean-mugging helena, but now she sees that there is more to her and quite possibly understands what made helena that person…however, bette brings out the softer side and it also allows bette to be bette..so yes, she likes the “new” helena, but this is really the “helena” she didn’t see…truth be told, the powerful helena is also intoxicating…net-net, they need to talk…i can hypothesize all day, but they need to talk..that’s the next chapter right, B&H talking…anyway, love this fic and the different perspectives you present…awesome…looking forward to the next post…Happy New Year.

    4. Hi, Silly…I hope I can call you Silly. Is it okay I call you Silly?…cuz it’s just a nickname…and I always nickname those I adore…And I adore your writing. You answered my question … which is what I thought…but…heheh…fanfic writers often do tricky tricky things! I really love this story. Keep going! You have an amazing head!

    5. sheesh…they need to just talk it out…like really talk about their feelings, but most of all about their pasts, because Bette knows only what she sees, not what Helena feels, ya know? So maybe she needs to tell her about the old helena but keep the new Helena intact…i guess…pps
