    Chapter 55

Law Offices of Joyce L. Wischnia

“Um-hmm….uh-hmm…..mmmmm.” Joyce Wischnia was pacing around her office as she read the agency contract in her hand.

Bette was getting slightly dizzy watching her every move.

“Doesn’t appear as if this is anything out of the ordinary, Ms. Porter.” The short-haired lawyer sat at her desk and flipped to the last page of the contract. Her reading glasses were perched on the end of her nose as she continued analyzing the document. “Ahh, spoke to soon.”

Bette leaned over the desk that separated her from the attorney and attempted to get a look at the typed words upside down.

“What’s out of the ordinary?” The brunette asked. After she had attempted to read the contract, Bette knew she would have the same luck deciphering it if it had been written in Mandarin.

“Typically, agencies don’t contract for services to include procuring recording contracts. But it looks as if In Tune is interested in not only procuring them, but making sure they get their cut up front.”

Bette stared blankly at the attorney.

Looking up from the document into questioning brown eyes, Joyce chuckled. “An agent’s job is to get an artist work, no matter the form.”

    Bette nodded her understanding.

“For musicians, it is usually in the form of getting gigs and shows for them.”

“But that’s something that I can do.” Bette asserted.

    “Not really.”

    “What do you mean?”

    “Are you a licensed agent?”

“No, I’m Kit and the band’s manager.”

“Right. Anyone can be a manager, Bette. I can call you Bette, right?”

    “Sure.”

“Ok, Bette. It’s against the law to perform the duties of an agent without a license in California, under the state’s Labor Code. The duties of an agent are very clear. Securing any kind of work in which the artist receives compensation for, in this case, booking performances for, say, a share of the ticket sales, is the job of an agent.”

Bette started to worry that the last two shows she booked illegally would come back and bite her in the ass.

“So, I could be criminally prosecuted?” she asked with trepidation.

    “No. Not exactly.”

    “What does that mean?

    1. Great update. I appreciate people who are OCD. Most folks don’t care about details until they get screwed. As the saying goes, “The devil’s in the details.” Look how Roger “Slimeball” Clemens got a mistrial through a minor technicality.

    2. No problem darling, there will be some for you too. You know where to find me, so take your time baby. Love this update, so far so true, I know about it as a live performer and be in the music industry for a while. This part is such real. So the pop corn is a good reason, can’t wait for next one. Keep it up my darling!!!! ;)

    3. Two wonderfully excellent update. Aaron is just a sleaze ball and Jodi is trying to fleece them. Damn what a wonderful story. And by the way I only make the girls i like blush :) Thank you for a great story.

    4. To answer your question my dear MeLL….I reckon avoidance…where would that leaves us otherwise in terms of mega drama…which you do sooooooo well! :0) I have nothing but praise for you. I may have to re-read this chapter a couple of times though to understand all the legal ramblings (kudos to you there again for your obsessional attention to details!) my foreign brain takes a while to analyse those things sometimes. One thing is for sure and it does not come as a surprise, Jodie was definitely out to screw Bette over…there is a double entendre in this statement also.. Now where might the rescue come from, I wonder? Great job chick this is a compelling and entertaining story! Thanks for posting…..hope your head is ok in the morning :0$

    5. Thanks for updates and let us know about this factual accuracy things :-) Geez, so Jodi is really one big ugly bad shark huh!? Luckily Bette not fall for her at all!! And Joyce is on her side to reveal the legal truth! :-) ha3.. Frankly, I kinda worry after posted my comment last time as realized that you might not know what I am talking about :-p Anyway maybe you’ll find time to play Mario again during weekend after not so tipsy anymore lol :-D Oya fyi you can play it in wii also. Well, thanks again for the update, enjoy the weekend!! :-)

    6. After meeting w/ Joyce it’s pretty clear that Bette will be advising teh band to saty away from Jodi (GOOD). But what i want to know is what the heck is Tina gonna do? I hope she’s upfront w/ Bette about the predicament she’s in and how her company only wants Kit. But then that creates all sorts of problems for Bette who wants to be loyal to her sister and friends at the same time…should she tell them or keep it a secret for their own good? So many questions? Hope you post soon and provide some answers :)

    7. Thank you for the gracious welcome. Funny thing is I read the very first chapter of this story and, after going away for sometime, I completely forgot about it. I had to go back and read all fifty-something chapters to get caught up and I must say it is a captivating story. I confess I’m a grammar snub who turns her nose down at poorly written stories, but you have amazed me with your writing! Please post very soon.
