    Intercept(ed) [Valentine’s Day Challenge]

Kit, I’m not coming,” Bette said, for what felt like the hundredth time that day. Not counting the voicemails and follow-up badgering-by-text she’d already received from Alice, this was Kit’s third call in the last 24 hours. As much as she loved her older sister, Bette’s patience had long since worn thin.

She dropped her briefcase and shut and locked the door behind her, dropping her keys on the table by the door. She switched her phone to the other ear as she stepped gratefully out of her heels, picked them up and headed toward her bedroom.

Come on, Bette, it’s going to be a big party at The Planet tonight,” Kit wheedled. “Everyone’s going to be there.”

Bette placed her heels in her closet and sat down on her bed.

Kit, I’ve just gotten home after an exceptionally long day at the office. I want to put on some sweatpants, have a glass of wine, and curl up in bed with a book. What I don’t want to do is come down to The Planet and get hit on all night. You know how that goes.”

Do I?” Kit asked, all innocence.

Yes, you do. As the evening progresses, the women approaching me will get less and less attractive and more and more drunk. I’ll end up shooting them all down, bruising egos and hurting feelings, and my reputation as an old, bitter ice queen will become that much more indelible.” Bette paused and took a breath. “So no, I’m not coming, Kit. For the last time.”

Bette. It’s Valentine’s Day. Us single girls –“

“– have to stick together,” Bette finished Kit’s sentence for her. “I know. You’ve said. And I said I’m not coming.” Realizing her words sounded harsh, Bette softened her tone a little and grasped for an olive branch to extend. “Alice and Shane and Dana will be there, right?”

    Yes,” Kit sighed.

    There you are then.”

There’s also gonna be plenty of fine-lookin’ things here tonight, baby sis. I think you’re missing an opportunity…”

Shane can have them, if she hasn’t already.” Bette said dryly. “I’ll talk to you later, Kit.”

Alright, alright, I got the hint. You know I was just trying to help. I know you don’t want to be alone. And Bette? As much as I hate to break it to you, you’re going to stay alone until you put yourself out there.”
