The next day, Tina was at work when a surprising call was put through.
“Tina Kennard speaking.”
“Professional.”
Tina beamed at the voice – it was Bette.
“But actually, I was calling because Angelica called me at lunch from school.”
“Oh my god,” Tina chuckled, shaking her head. “This is a nightmare. I’m so sorry – really. What did she want?”
“She asked if I had a good time the other night.”
“Oh my goodness – I’m gonna lose it with all of this sneaking around.”
“And … she asked me if you were happy.”
The interruption had Tina completely silence. “… She did?”
“Yeah. She asked me if I could tell if you were happy with me.”
Tina’s sadness overwhelmed her frustration as she looked down to the desk. She was touched by how much Angelica cared for her, but she was upset as well. “That’s sweet of her.”
“Do you wanna know what I said?”
“What did you say?”
“That you seemed to be happy by nature, but that you were happy with me, too. And that I was happy with you. It’s interesting how simplicity like that can bring clarity.”
“Yeah,” Tina sighed, playing with the pencil in her hand as she thought about her daughter.
“Hey … I don’t usually do this so soon, but … I want to ask you out again.”
“I assure you that I have no concept of the rules of dating, so don’t feel restricted,” Tina smiled, “But uh … I think that would be great. As long as it’s not because of my daughter, that is.”
“Despite her!” Bette teased, switching the phone to her other shoulder.
“I’m sorry … I just still feel odd about this, like I can’t get a date by myself or something …”
“Well I’m certain you could keep anyone interested, but it’s hard sometimes to make time for meeting new people.”
The understanding had Tina’s smile growing wider. “Yeah? … I guess that’s true. It just … would have been nice to meet you under more independent circumstances, that’s all.”
“Oh, believe me – our date was more entertaining than I ever would have imagined. You can’t make this stuff up!”
“Well, apparently Angelica can.”
“Hey, what do you say to a film?”

Wow impressive story can’t wait for more!
I loved the whole flirting moment, smooth and to the point… there is no hidden agenda there! I am enjoying the story too but I feel exhausted just thinking about having to handle a child like Angelica! She is a brilliant little character though! Thanks
oh bette… flowers, candy, baskets of fruit or whatever should be on the way to tina… love this story… and i know bette will find a way and they will be together… and never said what did did … wondering what job she has… great story.. pps

You know, that whole date is something I can see myself doing, if I felt as connected as these two do. Bette’s mishap can happen to anyone. I think Tina has already let it go or else she would not let Bette take another sip of her coffee and bid her “have a nice life”.
