    Speechless

Bette flipped through her index cards for the thirtieth time that evening. She poured over the content with thick black glasses slipping down her nose and hair down since her long day at work. Practice for speeches was never easy – nor was it fun – but Bette knew how crucial it was to be confident with the material. She heaved a sigh and focused again on the wording, muttering quietly to herself.

Tina had finished cleaning the kitchen, and was mid-yawn when she heard Bette’s mumblings from down the hall. Bette was pacing.

“No, that’s not it … From what we know of modern art … No …”

A smile tugged at Tina’s lips. She set the magazine down on the end table, and found herself drawn to the distracted figure.

When Bette turned again, Tina saw that the glasses had slipped down Bette’s nose. She saw that Bette was so tightly wound that she wasn’t doing herself much good anyway. An idea that suddenly surged through her brought a more sinister grin to Tina’s face.

“Hey, need some help?” Tina asked, as helpful as ever.

Bette didn’t even glance up from her index cards. Instead, she leant to an old habit where she reached out with her free hand to graze fingers over Tina’s arm. “No … well … there’s not much you can do at this point, T.”

    “I think I can help.”

At last, Bette tugged her eyes away from her spot on the card. “What’s that?”

“I said I think I can help,” Tina smirked, earning some mild laughter from her wife.

“T … T, trust me – I want to have those thoughts too, but I’m really overwhelmed right now.”

“No, I know … I just thought it might be good for you to try something.”

Bette’s eyes had drifted back to the card, and although she had an incredible ability to multi-task, Tina crossed her arms. She promptly cleared her throat, to which Bette mumbled more of her speech.

Rather than try her hand at conversation any longer, Tina spoke with actions instead. After pulling a hair elastic from her wrist and drawing her short hair up into a messy bun, she followed after Bette.

From what we believe of modern art, we can see the history of censorship in its most damaging forms … yes … better but somehow lacking …”
