“When we drew closer, they shot at us, and it was at that point when things became incredibly chaotic. I was driving one of the cars chasing after you and was afraid that the road had become really tricky to navigate so my guess is the driver must have lost control of the van because of the road conditions. We saw the van turn over, several times, until it came to a stop on its roof.”

My good eye bugged out and I dropped the spoon on the table with nerveless fingers.

“Yeah,” Bai said gently and pursed her lips.

“Miraculously, they forgot about you, or maybe it was too chaotic for them to think smartly about what to do … anyway, the two who were still alive inside the van with you started shooting at us. There were two others who had been thrown off the van as it rolled, because they’d been the ones closest to the door, and had been firing at us as they tried to drive away.”

“Jack checked on whether the two who were thrown out of the van were still alive while Olivia and two others in a separate car briefly exchanged fire with the two inside. We knew you were wearing a vest … and if you’d survived the crash, you had that to protect you.”

“The two were not smart and they were not skilled, it looks like. The exchange of fire was over quickly with them. As I shouted out your name, I’d circled around and checked in the front of the van.  I saw that the driver was hanging upside down, dead, it looked like.”

“There’d been a helicopter that had been involved in the chase, and we found you and saw you were still breathing so Olivia and I took off in it, with you, to take you to this hospital. Apparently, Brom had arranged for a number of things as back-up, in case something happened. And taking you to this hospital had been part of that. The helicopter was as well. There were emergency techs on-board who helped to stabilize you until we got here.”

“Dr. Button treated you, and the rest you know…” she ended.

“So where is Jack? And who else was working with you and Olivia?” I asked, figuring out that this would have been a much bigger operation than what she’d told me so far.
