Simple Joys
The sun soon disappears below the horizon, leaving the sky in mesmerising hues of orange, violet and blue. I catch myself wondering what sunsets might look like from the other planets in our solar system.
*********
Ah, there it is, she’s lost in thought again. Hmm, she’s doing that thing I find so endearing. Chewing on the right side of her lower lip and lightly furrowing her eyebrows in intense concentration. I wonder what she’s thinking about this time.
”Penny for your thoughts, honey?”
I ask, as I run my fingers through her immaculately styled, short hair. This gets her attention. She turns to me and gives me a playful smile then gently strokes my cheek.
”I was just thinking about how beautiful you are and how lucky I am to have you in my life”
She replies, then flashes me one of her cheeky smiles with a glint of something less innocent in her eyes. I couldn’t help but let out a little laugh at that. So, she’s feeling flirty. I narrow my eyes at her briefly then take the empty cup out of her hand.
”Something tells me that’s not where your thoughts were, but I’ll play along this time. Yes, I am rather beautiful and you are very lucky to be with me”
This gets a little chuckle out of her and with that, I walk past her and make my way to the kitchen, holding her gaze for as long as possible. Two can play this game, baby.
She walks into the kitchen as I set the cups in the sink and begin to wash one of them. She comes to stand beside me and leans against the counter, holding the dish cloth. She smells lovely. A mix of the scent of laundry and her own natural perfume. She also looks incredibly cute with this new hairstyle.
”Ok”, she starts, as she watches my hands, ”If you must know, I was wondering what sunsets might look like on the other planets.”
This makes me giggle, for I am not surprised at all and I am highly amused. She is capable of formulating the most obscure questions in her mind. A trait which I am very fond of.
”I knew it”, I say, as I pass her the first cup that I’m done washing. She takes it from me with a soft smile, wipes it gingerly and goes to put it away. I find myself disliking the space this creates between us, albeit fleeting.
