    The Beginning of the End

Cat rang the door bell and knocked on the door, but Sam didn’t answer. She called her cell again and again, but got no answer. For a moment she hesitated, then she dialed Sam’s office. The officer who answered was polite, but brief. He told Cat that Sam was not in office and wouldn’t be for the next two weeks. Cat leaned against the door and slid down to a sitting position. Her mind was filled with questions. “Did Sam leave Glasglow, go on vacation? Is she filing for a transfer? Will I ever see her again?” Her emotions took over and she started to sob uncontrollably. “It can’t end this way”, she thought. She tried to compose herself, her hands covering her face, but it was no use. The tears continued to flow and her sobs got louder. After what seemed like hours, she wiped her face and stood up. She reached down to grab her purse and as she stood up, she heard the door unlock.

Little did she know Sam was listening on the other side of the door the whole time. Debating whether or not to let her in and let in all the emotion that she had managed to control within herself. Sam had also started to think about what happened to her earlier that day, but before she could complete her thought, Cat stood up and was about to leave. Sam threw caution to the wind, and quickly opened the door. They both stood there for what seemed like forever. Cat was the first to make a move as she rushed in and gave Sam a hug. She immediately noticed the tension in Sam’s body. It was as if Sam’s muscles were expressing their anger toward her. Sam didn’t even attempt to hug her. Cat pulled back and noticed a grimace on Sam’s face. Sam quickly recovered and closed the door. Turning around to lean against it.

“Why are you here Cat? I mean why now, why tonight?”

“I dunno, I’ve wanted to talk to you all week, but you wouldn’t answer your phone. And today…all day…I just didn’t feel right, so after i got home I went for a walk to clear my head…and I kept walking. I walked for a long time and when I stopped, I was outside your apartment. And then I knew…I had to see you….”
