    The Beginning of the End

As Sam took a nap on the couch, Cat scurried around the flat cleaning and organizing. She didn’t want Sam to have to worry about not being able to do it. And she had to admit, it felt good…being with Sam..doing normal things around the house. She even managed to wash a load of laundry and fold them. She took a pile to the room and began putting them away. Towels and sheets in the closet. Socks in the basket near Sam’s shoes in the closet. Cat smiled thinking, “Sam was the only person she knew who put her socks in a basket instead of a drawer.” The last few items were Sam’s clothes. She set them on the bed and turned to open a drawer. What she saw in it, made her stop in her tracks. It was an envelope with her name on it.

She carefully lifted it out of the drawer. It was open. And without hesitation she pulled the card out. It was simple yet elegant. Cat gently brushed her fingers over the embossed words on the front as she read it quietly to herself. “Of all the places I’ve been…all the faces I’ve seen…and all the dreams I’ve dreamed…” Cat opened the card deliberately and continued to read. “Nothing compares to you..”

She stumbled back, reaching with one arm for the safety of the bed. She held the card to her chest and took a deep breath before reading the rest of it.The words touched her so deeply, she could only close her eyes and take it in. She exhaled and eagerly looked at the card again…the words were now in Sam’s handwriting.”Nothing compares to you my love. The past two months with you have been the happiest of my life. And I’m looking forward to many many more with you, if you’ll have me. I’m so grateful to have you in my life. With all my love, Sam.

As if those words weren’t enough to make her cry, Cat noticed the date scribbled at the bottom of the card. She recognized it instantly. It was the day she told Sam about her and Frankie. Unable to control her reaction at this point, Cat let out a soft whimper. A sound that was filled with sorrow, regret, and disbelief.
