Check Please – (Chapter: Axe Murderer)

The sun was beating on me ten times worse by now. I had to find a way to explain it without me sounding like a total witch. “Well, for starters,” I began stretching my legs out in front of me and grabbing two of my energy drinks from my bag, offering one to Spencer. She took it and opened it. Within the first sip she realized it was warm and set it back down. “No, I didn’t go to see Kyla’s new apartment last night, and I wasn’t busy with work either.”

“Then why did you lie? I mean if you didn’t want to see me you could have just…” I interrupted her to correct her.

“No, trust me Spencer. I want to see you. The problem was, I had just been fired and I was in a bad mood.” I went on to explain. “And when I am in a bad mood, I have a habit of taking it out on other people. I didn’t want to take it out on you.” She sat in silence for a while pondering what I had just said. She nodded her head and I hoped to god that was all I had to explain. I knew it wouldn’t be though. It had been the second time I had ever seen Spencer, but I knew her well enough to know that she doesn’t give up on things she wants to know about. She had that look on her face like there was a question she wanted to ask, but she refused to ask it. “What else do you want to know?” I asked pushing her for more questions.

She faked a smile. “So how did you end up falling asleep on the ground last night?”

“I was really tired?” I said trying to lighten the mood but she gave me a stern look that told me I had no choice but to be honest. “Okay, I have been homeless since I was seventeen. My biological parents and I didn’t exactly get along.”

“I thought you said you were adopted.”

“I was. You see, I got put into foster care and I was adopted by Raife and Christine Davies for some lame publicity stunt. We didn’t get along either, so at seventeen I left. I got my first job a couple of months ago. And I got fired yesterday. I have a total of four hundred eighty dollars in my pocket and that is supposed to buy me food for the rest of my life. I’m living out of a gym bag for Christ sakes. I sleep wherever I can. I’m late to everything and I have a sister who has everything she ever wanted because she stayed with our foster parents ‘till she was eighteen.” I said all of this, not once looking away from my gym bag. I was searching through it for my new lighter. It was buried somewhere in all of the dirty clothes and packs of unopened cigarettes. I finally found it and lit a cancer stick to calm my nerves.
