“Of course! You were so upset because your mom had some guy over and wouldn’t let you be in the house, even though it was your birthday.”
“And then I remembered that I was 18, and I’d just inherited a shitload of money. Oh, and that I was old enough to legally get a hotel room,” she smirked.
“That too.”
“Now that was fun!”
“It was,” I conceded.
“Definitely ‘Best Birthday Ever’ material right there,” she exclaimed.
“Glad I could be of service to you,” I joked.
“Ooooh Miss Carlin- did that just mean what I think it meant?”
“You’re crazy,” I said with a smile.
“I am,” she smirked.
“Your birthday is soon, isn’t it?”
“Three weeks from Monday. Ew. I’m gonna be 26… ew!” she shuddered.
“26 is only a year older than 25.”
“Yeah, but 26 is the first birthday where you’re closer to 30 than you are to 20. That’s gross. I never thought I’d be this old!”
“Relax. You don’t look a day over 20.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“It was a compliment,” I told her.
“Well, thank you,” she smiled. An awkward silence filled the room. I didn’t really know what to say or do next, so I just sat there, literally twiddling my thumbs, waiting for something to happen. Nothing did, though, so I cleared my throat and took some initiative for once.
“So… um… what exactly are you doing? I mean, like, with your job and stuff,” I asked.
“Basically just producing music. Occasionally song-writing, but I don’t really like to give away my songs… it doesn’t feel right.”
“Are the people you work with… you know, like, famous?”
“Some of them, yeah,” she replied with a smile. I was tempted to ask for names, but that would seem kind of loser-ish. Even for me.
“Do you ever think about getting back into performing?”
“I don’t know. Sometimes, I guess. I think it’s still a little too soon. The wounds haven’t fully healed yet, you know?”
“What exactly happened? I mean, all of a sudden it just, like, didn’t go well anymore?” I asked.
“Sort of. Like, the first album came out… the reviews were great, the album sales were amazing, practically every date on our tour was sold out… it was like a dream. And then, I don’t know… I guess it was a combination of things. My label changed producers between the 1st and 2nd album, and the 2nd guy was a real asshole. He barely knew what he was doing and he and I clashed, like, on every single decision. Not to fully blame him, but a huge part of why the c.d. turned out the way it did was because of him. Anyways… we put that c.d. out, the reviews were mixed, mostly bad… but none of the songs really caught on, and it barely sold anything. Didn’t even hit the top 50. People just started saying the only reason I made it as far as I did was because of who my dad was. And things just spiraled downhill from there,” she explained.

ok, so I totally read this at work. And then it got busy. So I’m guessing that all around this city, people were reading your fic and then fell off their chairs, had heart attacks and just plain fainted at the loveliness of it. You’re building this up at a perfect pace and I’m loving every single second of it. You know you’re the ace mate, keep it up. (Oh, and be careful, people may want to hybridise you…)
