Growing Up – (Chapter: Finale)
“What’s not funny? I’m just trying to tell you about my class!” The sarcasm just oozes from her voice and if I did not feel like a twelve year old girl with her crush, I might have found it in my heart to be mad at her.
“Spencer, please answer me.”
“Let’s give it a chance.” I may die of happiness, but I don’t care.
Tears stream from my eyes and I can feel my heart skip a beat. Elation courses through my veins and I feel intoxicated by love. Reaching my arms around her slender shoulders, I wrap her up and pull her to the bed with me, holding on like I may never let go.
“Spencer, I love you.” I whisper into her ear as I pull her tighter, saturating the thin cotton that veils her shoulder with my tears.
“I love you too.” Murmurs a fragile voice from somewhere near my ear and its sincerity somehow manages to expand the dimension of my heart ten times over. I wonder momentarily if it is possible to love somebody too much; I hope not, but I can be wrong. Easing my grip slightly, I anticipate Spencer to do the same, instead she holds tighter. “Don’t let go. Just hold me.”
“Okay.”
And I do. I hold her. I stroke her hair as she lays in my arms, sighing contently from time to time when she delicately caresses my forearm with slightest touch of her fingertips. Time is passing, but the rest of the world does not seem as important, I have everything I want and need right here in my arms. Silently I wonder how I will let her go tomorrow and how I will live without her touch for months at a time.
“Ash?” She says, her voice politely interrupting the comfortable silence of the past couple hours.
“Yeah?” I squeak out meagerly, unsure of my vocal abilities at the moment.
“Whatcha thinkin’?”
“I uh, I’m thinkin’ I might not be able to let you go.”
“Me too.” Her confession makes my heart flutter again, but weep at the same time. She and I are finally on the same page. We finally feel the same way; check that, we have finally actually told each other we feel the same way and now we will be separated by the length of a continent. “How are we gonna make this work?”

When I saw that you had posted I, after jumping up and down screaming for a few minutes, knew I had to read it…. and, well I have come to one conclusion: You are Amazing. Seriously, that is some wonderful writing. I really needed a happy ending after that season finale was to iffy. Anyway, great post. Be well and Happy New Year. P.S.-sequels are always well appreciated.
CaseyG…been reading this fic forever…I can’t remember if it started over on the Spashley forum or not. Either way, this tale has touched me many a time. Brilliantly articulated. You put these girls through so much, allowing them to face the pain and hurt of life and love, before they could finally come together. A much needed path to take in the arena of true love. Their actions, decisions, and thought processes, though at times irrational and full of fear, were so real and utterly tangible. Love is almost never about saying the words, brushing past the fear, and putting it on the line within a moments notice. It seems so complicated and terrifying that its simplicity becomes anything but that. An emotion just is; it exists, naked, until we try to manipulate it to our liking. Your Spencer and Ashley couldn’t just say the words…they had to allow it all beat them silly until the simplicity of it all shone through. Somehow, the journey up until the moment of clarity, will always make love all the more precious. Thanks so much for your words, I have enjoyed them and this fic immensely, and I always get excited when I see your name on the boards. Much love.
You’re one of the first authors I ever read and you’re still one of my favorites. Memories was…WOW and this is now WOW too. I love how everything is resolved so cleanly in your stories. There’s a sense of “life’s just WAITING to take you there if you just let it sweep you up once in awhile” and I love it. It’s when your girls finally let go and do what they NEED to do, everything finally happens. I hope you keep writing – even if it’s the slow creation that this story has been. I’ll wait years if you write another gem like this. Much love coming at ya!
