    Too late.

     

    “Me too.”  I whisper it into her ear and I can feel all the little hairs stand up.  I love that I can still do that to her.  Soon after she begins tracing small circles into my wrist with her finger and now it’s my turn to get goose bumps. 

     

    I lay motionless for what seems like an eternity, frozen in my thoughts.  I finally realize that I may never have another chance to tell her; at least not in a moment as perfect as this.  I decide I am just going to suck it up and say it, regardless of the consequences.  “Spence.”  Her breath is evening out and I could tell she is drifting off. 

     

    “Hmmm?”  Her hand movements had ceased long ago.

     

    “I want to tell you something.” She tilts her head toward me with her eyes closed. 

     

    “Hmmm?”  I breathe deeply at the proximity of her mouth and mine.  I can tell she is fading fast.  I hesitate a couple more moments.

     

    “I’m in love with you.”  I am too late.  She has faded into dreamland before the words cross my lips.  I will call it fate.  If she was meant to know, she would not have fallen asleep.  I lean in and press a kiss into her cheek.  “Good night.”  I wrap my arms tightly around her and succumb to sleep as well. 

     

    It feels like I have only blinked my eyes when I hear the alarm blaring.  It only makes me hold on to her tighter, because I don’t want to let go.  She struggles to reach the snooze without leaving the cocoon our bodies have made.  “Ash, wake up.”  This time I wrap my leg around hers as an added statement of protest.  “Ash, you gotta let go, I can’t reach the alarm.”

     

    “No!”  I manage to grunt out.  She continues wiggling until she has shimmied the two of us far enough up the bed to turn the alarm off and the light on.  I bury my head in her shoulder to escape the light.  She strokes my hair with her left hand and rubs my forearm with her right, but after several minutes I knows she will have to get ready soon.
