    Imprinting

I twirled a perfect bronze curl nervously. Looking in the mirror, I could see there was a worried line between my brows. I couldn't get it to disappear. I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and looked in the mirror again. It was still there.

    So much for being calm.

The day was here – the day where my parents finally let me go off somewhere alone with Jacob. Of course, he'd taken me places alone before, but I was a child then. Well, it had only been a year ago, but now, I was seven. Fully matured. Which meant that Jacob didn't just want me to be happy, didn't just want to be there for me, but now he wanted me. In a whole new way.

My parents weren't too happy about this. For one, my father still didn't like Jacob. There was the whole grudge about the whole thing with my mom. I sighed. Couldn't he get over it already? She'd chosen him, after all. Couldn't he just be happy for me? My mom, on the other hand, knew Jacob all too well. He'd loved her at one point – really loved her. Not like he loved me, because imprinting is different than falling in love on your own. But now that he was with me, my mom wasn't so sure he was right. But she let me be with him anyway. There were still best friends, and I tried not to let that bother me.

The truth was, I was scared silly. Because I knew Jacob better than I knew myself, but what did I know about him romantically? Nothing. I'd never really thought of him that way, and he'd never thought of me that way… at least, he'd never said it out loud. But now that I was old enough, things were different. And I was terrified.

I scurried down the stairs anyways, hoping I didn't look too frightened. If my parents thought I was nervous for this, they wouldn't let me go. Even more than my relationship with Jacob was the concept that he was a werewolf. And my family were vampires. Although the wolves had helped them several times in the past, there was just no getting over that little amount of hostility that comes with being mortal enemies.
