Imprinting
"Seriously, Nessie," Jacob said, interrupting my flashback, "there's nothing to worry about. My brothers and I can take care of ourselves."
I scowled more. "I know that," I muttered, looking at the floor.
My father chuckled. "Well, you two have fun. Ness -" he cut off then, because my mother was giving him a glare – "I mean, Renesmee, your mother and I will be here if you should need us for any reason. Be careful."
Jacob fumed, his hands shaking. "Be careful? Of what? I just said, we can take care of ourselves – AND Nessie! She'd be safer in La Push than here in this -"
My father's eyes tightened. "I wasn't referring to the abilities of your pack, Jacob," he said, very formal. Always formal, especially when he was controlling his anger. He did it much better than Jacob. "I was simply telling her to be careful of the relationship between Renesmee and you. Although your pack may approve, other people are skeptical. This is a risky relationship."
Jacob was shaking all over now. I pulled away from my father to hold Jacob back. I'd thought he'd gotten better at this…
"If you honestly think that our relationship is more risky than the one you had with Bella -"
I pushed harder. I was glad I was stronger than humans, or he wouldn't have budged. But, because I was, Jacob was slowly being pushed towards the door.
"Jacob, stop!" I told him, pulling him to a halt a few feet away from the large double doors. I hated when Jacob said rude things about my family. It wasn't very often, but I knew that he was thinking them, too. My father knew even better.
My mother was frowning. "Jake, you're lucky that we're letting you take her out tonight. You know how we feel about you two, and…" she trailed off, because I was opening the door now.
"Bye!" I called, pulling Jacob by the hand now. He was exceptionally more in control.
My parents murmured their goodbyes. The last thing I saw before the door closed was my father's expression – the one he used when he was holding back his anger – and the worried line in between my mother's brows – the same line I had seen just a few minutes ago.
